M1210 VGA Connector

Hi all,

I'm looking to buying the M1210 from costco very soon as i will be needing a laptop for school (college)....anyways,

I saw a picture of the M1210's VGA connector, and to my surprise, there are no 'pin connecting slots' (?) usually found on the right and left sides of most VGA Connectors.

Here's a pic of a random laptop's VGA connector WITH the pin-slots VS. M1210's VGA Connector:

Now my question is, will the M1210 be able to efficiently be connected to an external monitor, namely the Acer AL1916W? Or will the VGA connector keep falling off my laptop everytime i move it because the pins are not connected into the slots?

I'm thinking of buying this one from Newegg.com for < $200, but if it will not work efficiently (i.e. VGA connector falling off the laptop everytime if i move it a little) then i wont be getting the monitor.

Thanks for your helpp!!

???

22 People viewed this topic and none of you have an opinion about this?

I'm sure there are PLENTY of M1210 owners here who have at least attempted to connect their laptops to an external monitor...

I just need an opinion so i can decide whether or not i'd wanna get an extra monitor...

I <3 my external monitor! it fits pretty well and I actually prefer it much better because of the easy click/easy go. One thing I do wanna mention is the new nvidia panal has a new power saving tool that will cut down your screen hertz from 60 to 50 to save Battery life. If your in that mode the external monitor won't run w/ 32bit at 1600x1200 it will at 12xx x something hence you'll have to turn that off to turn the external at 32bit =).

Thanks for your opinion Emotion!

I have a question, will the power saving mode also cut down the resolution from a native 1440x900 to lower, or do you think it will be okay?

Also, the VGA cable coming from your monitor to the M1210, does it ever become disconnected if you move your laptop just a little bit? Or does it feel like the cable is not securely attached to your laptop?

Thanks!

it's a tool you probably won't even use because it's the new nvidia control panal. I recommend the old school w/ the classic and even setting power mizier thingy to lowest it still keeps running at 32bit color +1600x1200

The new VGA connector hold the cable very well. the only thing if you get the laptop at Costco with the Nvidia card, your performance playing video, an specially TV will not be as smooth as with the GMA950 due to the 64 bits vs 256 bits. That is the only thing that bothers me about the Nvidia card. 3D apps with the Nvidia card run much better than on the GMA 950 though.

can the 7400 drive both the m1210's display AND an external monitor at 32 bit color? (the external is 1280x1024). I'm trying to run in extended desktop mode but can't get the external above 16 bit color. I'm hearing lots of people talk about running high res monitors off the m1210, but I can't tell if their simulataneous running the laptop's own display. thanks.

I fixed the problem. Once I switched to the old school nvidia panel, there were lots of extra options. One of them on was performance versus picture quality. When I switched to picture quality, the refresh rate on the external dropped, but the available color content increased. Hopefully it stays stable... Thanks for your help all.
