My MacBook is "Mooing".

If you've been surfing around the net lately, you have probably heard of the MacBook "Moo" problems that stem from an internal fan that attempts to spin up, but fails and retries several times. The result is a sound similar to that of a cow mooing.

I'm curious as to whether people have had luck in the past getting this issue fixed by Apple. My fiance owns a Powerbook and Apple refused to fix her "warping" problem six times before she found a "Genious" who would do it. They blamed it on her before someone who actually knows about the issue admitted it is a design defect (much like the plastic covering the vents inside some MacBooks).

I don't want to have to make six different trips to the Apple store before I finally get someone who has the brains to figure out the problem and offer to fix it under my warranty. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Before you took a trip to the Apple store, call up Apple's support number. If they're not any help, schedule an appointment with an Apple Genius, and then insist that Apple phone support was no help. As long as you're nice to them, they should help you out.

Unfortunately, I got the same run around from the "Genius Bar" at the Apple store. "This isn't covered under Apple Care." So I asked them what was, because every time I come in there to have one of their defects fixed, they make up some BS excuse as to why they won't touch it.

I even referred to the Apple web site that even stated "If you have a high-pitch sound coming from the internal fan of your laptop, please contact an Apple Store, or use Apple Care."

Heh...you should've read my thread on "Quality Issues"...

The "mooing" issue, as well as a "whine" issue are all over Apple Discussions right now...just about everyone and their cousin is on there discussing (no joke) what build week they have, and whether their logic board replacement fixed the issue. The Mooing seems to be coming from shotty no-name/no-label fans on some of the earlier machines, and ppl who are having their fans replaced are claiming they are labeled, name brand (don't know who off the top of my head) ones.

Personally, I generally had better luck w/ AppleCare and the store manager than I ever did w/ the Genius Bar--they are technical support, not customer service....far from it, actually. You certainly have my sympathy on the runaround, though.

If you're fortunate enough to be within the return window, return it. Return it, wait until the next revision, or just buy a PC like I did. HP's repair turnaround (owned 2 of them so far) for a bad hard drive on my Pavilion was out Monday morning, back Wednesday morning....that's all. The drive died a week after I got it, but in the 2 1/2 years that followed, never a problem.

Linky

Here's the link I was referring to.

Thankfully, there's a guy that goes to my university who I recently discovered working there. I got in touch with him and he says he would be happy to submit it for review.

Seriously, at first - I thought the noise was my stomach growling. Then I put the lappy up to my ear and I figured it was the internal iCow that was hungry, not me =)

Another linky for reading:

ah, well that's the macbook pro buzzing issue vs. the macbook's mooing issues. the prior being officially acknowledged as a problem. hopefully the latter will garner official support sooner rather than later.

Actually, I think most of the Yonah duos make some sort of buzz under 0% utilization. My DV1660 makes a faint one.

An update was provided today for the issue. Hopefully this helps with the "mooing".
