7200 or 5400???

I need some help deciding on if I should upgrade to the new 7200rpm hard drive or not??? I've heard that Hitachi is noisy and hot!! and the Seagate is quiet but hotter then the Hitachi...so should I just get a bigger 5400 and wait until someone gets it right?? or are the reviews i'm reading on these hard drives just people being picky??

these type of questions generate 3 separate categories of conclusions:

1. people who have only used 5400rpm will tell you 7200 is not worth it

2. people who have only used 7200rpm will tell you 7200 is noticeably faster than the 5400

3. people who have used both are pretty much divided 50/50 on whether 7200rpm is worth it

but i believe you should consider your budget. only reason i have a 7200rpm was because it was offered for free and i honesty believe the 100gig 7200 rpm would be better for me than the 120gb 5400rpm drive.

I have used both and love the 7200RPM hard drive. I dont think its really noisy at all. The DVD drive is A LOT noisier to me. The noise between the 7200RPM hard drive and the dvd drive is like a night and day differnce. Get the upgrade, then you have the best and wont have to upgrade again for longer!

OK..I see both points of view...I guess I was more concerned with the heat factor then noise and what implications it would have on performance?? By the way any cheap ideas for software or hardware to copy old hard drive over to the new hard drive??

As far as heat goes, I dont know what you are buying but with my XPS M1710 the hard drive is the COOLEST thing in the laptop. Using a program to see the temps, at idle the cpu is cooler then it but when you get to heavy useage the hard drive stays at about 109F when most of the other stuff goes to over 150F or at least near it. I really cant say I understand the differnce in the temp of the 7200 and the 5400.

hitachi is neither hot or noisy, it flies

Hitachi makes great notebook hard drives. IMO, seagate makes better desktop drives than just about any mfr out there. I have a 7.2k 60GB Hit in my M170 and it is not hot at all. Oh, and it consistently hits ~41Mb/s avg read speeds

I did the upgrade to thr 7.2k Hitachi....I have to admit it is a little noisy...I mean it clicks a very little compared to 5.4k but its nothing that bothers me...as far as the heat goes....not hot at all!!!
