Order Process -
I ordered the laptop using the website with a credit card. The process was fairly painless. Hypersonic will not ship to an address that is not the billing address on the credit card or listed with the credit card company. I didn't want to mess with my credit card company, so I had the system delivered to my apartment. I called Hypersonic a few times during build-out to make changes to my order. They were always friendly and helpful.

Shipping -
I used ground shipping. There was no real issue except Hypersonic did not update their website or email me the shipping information. I got a call from UPS saying they were at my door to deliver (on the day I was expecting it to ship). After confirming with Hypersonic that the unit had indeed already shipped, the UPS driver was kind enough to stop by my apartment before her last pick-up to drop it off. Hypersonic sent me the tracking info and updated the website status after I called them.

The system was shipped in a Hypersonic box, with a generic laptop box inside. Hypersonic padded the inside with styrofoam peanuts. Everything arrived undamaged, except I did not receive my t-shirt or DVD recovery disk. Hypersonic said that these 2 items would be shipped separately.

First Impression -
My first thought was 'Wow, it's huge!'. I had seen other 17" systems at brick and mortar stores, but I guess out of the store it just seems larger. Then I turned it on... the screen is beautiful! The weight feels the same as my 15" Toshiba work computer.

Display -
Again the screen is absolutely amazing. I have no regrets getting the higher res. screen. Totally beautiful, no dead pixels and really bright. Games look much nicer on this versus my Dell 20.1" flat panel.

Sound -
Not too impressed, it's not bad, but not great either. The speaker placing is unusual, so the sound isn't aimed at the primary user. The system is loud enough to watch a movie, but you cannot turn it all the way up without distortion. Headphones sound fine during gaming, no distortion or noise at normal listening volume. The microphone input works fine for Teamspeak or Ventrillo. Not really impressed with the audio software. I played around with some of the effects during .mp3 playback, and it usually ended up with distortion. I also don't like where the headphone/mic jacks are placed on the unit, they are right where you would use an external mouse. This could cause a major issue if you are using a headset with a large plug that needed an adapter to the miniplug.

I purchased an Audigy PCMCIA card and this WILL NOT work with this laptop. Luckily, I was able to return the card. Hypersonic should update their website to show that the Duo systems now only have an ExpressCard slot. I assume the pictures they are using on their site are for the older non-duo system that did have a PCMCIA slot.

I am considering purchasing the SoundBlaster USB external box, but am still looking at all the options.

Fans -
The system is nice and quiet, I have been gaming over the week-end with no issues. The DVDROM can get a little noisy when spinning up (noticed during the loading of software, I didn't notice this during DVD playback tho).

Some quick benchmark scores - This is with Norton Systemworks, Microsoft Office, Photoshop and games installed. I wanted to give a perspective of normal real-world performance. I haven't run the benchmarks multiple times yet.

3D Mark 03 - 16674
3D Mark 05 - 7337
3D Mark 06 - 4649

Whatever the scores, I have been playing World of Warcraft and Half Life 2 this week-end @ 1920x1200 with full detail. WOW is like a whole new experience... This system puts my desktop 3.4 P4 to shame!

Nitpicks -
I haven't found a way to disable the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. I have noticed during typing that I will sometimes hit the pad and will move the curser. Also, the clock only displays 24 hour time, they might be able to adjust this with a future BIOS update.

Side note - I bought the Kensington Contour backpack and took it back. The system would fit in the inside pouch, but you really had to force it in, and it was then difficult to remove. I got the Targus XL backpack and the unit fits fine, but I do think the Kensington pack was better looking.

Overall, this week-end I have been very pleased. I would definentely recommend Hypersonic and this system to others.

Great review and glad that everything is working on it.

The sound seems to be a common issue mentioned - and I see you hit on the point that I did - the speakers are facing up, not towards the user's ears. I tried standing the system up (on my Targus podium) and it didn't make the difference. Speakers are a must for this system. Headphone usage is great - I do agree.

Definitely glad it got there and again, congrats! - Oh.. And Serenity… we need that series (Firefly) brought back on TV!

That 3d mark 05 score is pretty low. I think like the average score for the 7900 gtx 512 mb is like 8200-8500. When your running 3d mark 05 quit out of all of that virus crap like AVG controller and crap like that.

I just stopped various services and re-ran 3D Mark 05 for 8260.

Good to here that your updated score was more at par with a "clean" running environment.

I'd really like to see what that machine can do without all the ram hoggin apps that windows has. Turn some stuff of and roll it again. Here's my latest on the single core 256 7800 gtx. Keep in mind i have the bare minimum's of windows running so i was able to boost it quite a bit.

This pic kinda sux so copy paste it to desktop and use the windows pic viewer to see it. Btw its the score on the top machine not the 6800gt machine.

Disabling touchpad

Fusion, if you go into the settings for the touchpad, under the "Touchpad Option" tab, you can set it not to be disable during typing. Other than that, I don't know how to disable it, but this has helped me.

I am starting a new job and I won't get my work laptop until 9/1. So, I guess my Hypersonic will have to do

Anyway, after I get my work machine, I plan on wiping the system and just loading the basics. So, I will post scores from a fresh install next month.

On a CX7, try Fn +F1

pat.

Excellent, that worked!!

Keep in mind though. If you use FN+F1 - you will disable the DJ controls on the system. The LEDs still function - but the controls themself do not - unless this is a difference with the first and second generations.
