LCD on when lid is closed?

Well, I have recently noticed that my LCD remains on when my lid closes. I did change the Power Management settings to DO NOTHING when the lid is closed, but on my 700m, it still turned the LCD off.

Is there a way around this? I noticed that the M90 lacks the little pin that the LCD had by the hinges which would turn the LCD off when pressed. That was actually quite useful as I could press it in class when watching some clips to avoid disturbing people near me with the LCD's light.

the m90 i would presume would have a system for detecting whether the lid is shut by some sort of switch that is inside the casing of the hinge, instead of the manual external "switch" of the 700m.

oh, just another random thing. if you hit the switch on the 700m and then shine a flashlight on the screen, you can see what is being displayed there. it only shuts off the backlight and the lcd remains "on." just a random thing i was fooling with one day.

Yeah, I noticed that it remains on also. Only after the specified time to turn off the screen is met that it will completely shut off. I liked that a lot though, as it conserved a lot of battery life.

On my XPS2 LCD does turn off but if i press media button it goes on with lid still closed, dunno if its normal, might be because I use desktop video drivers.

Yeah my E1705 does that too -- the backlight stays on when the lid is closed. Very annoying and you have to wait for windows to turn off the display.

My old 9300 also had issues with the backlight -- like it would turn off when the lid was closed but if you pressed one of the media buttons on the front of the laptop the LCD would stay on permanently. I even tried flashing the BIOS to fix it but no go. I was sure hoping the newer laptop would have that issue resolved, but not, its friggin worse.

My 9300 had the same exact problem.. turned out to be a fault in the video drivers. Try using the program Driver Cleaner to completely wipe out the current drivers, then install the newest drivers off of Dell Support. Good luck!

Yes it is a driver bug just like sometimes with certin drivers Icons get displaced when reopening the Lid. A work around is set your display to turn off after a couple minutes in your power options.

Best Wishes

also a setting in BIOS controls whether display stays on

Well, I just reformatted my machine and I installed the newest Dell drivers already.

BIOS setting? I looked all over for it, and I couldn't find it.

PS - I set the USB to High Speed mode now (2.0). Does it really comsume that much more battery power?

in the bios where you are able to set power & performance options, i believe that there is an option to set display active or inactive when lid is closed.

EDIT: i'm going to check my own bios today.

just to let you know... i have a 9400/e1705 and my screen switches off when i close the lid. In my power options, it is set to do nothing when lid is closed...

so it probably is something in the bios or something.

Still haven't found any BIOS setting for it.

ok, i looked at the BIOS of my M1710, and you are right, its not there. they have really GUI'D up BIOs since my I8200.

anyway, there IS an option to choose what it does.

go to display>properties>power options> and select the tab "advanced" where you will see a list of what you computer should do when you close the lid.

Well, I have it set to "Do Nothing". However, on my 700m, I have it set to the same thing, and the backlight still turns off when I close the lid. I think all M90s are like this.

ok guys it didnt work for me after i reformated and installed another video driver. Then i went back and installed dell's primary driver (not experimental one) and it turns off. The only issue is that dells' driver will make the size of windows change when u open it again. Its annoying sometimes.

Yeah... that.

I noticed the backlight went off but then my icons get all messed up. I hope they fix that sooon.

How about everyone call's and b****es about it and maybe they will do somethin'.

I FOUND THE SOLUTION TO THIS COMMON PROBLEM!

Make sure that you have the NVIDIA Display Driver Sercive set to AUTOMATIC. I was cleaning up my startup processes and immediately after I set that one to MANUAL the screen wouldn't turn off when I closed the lid. You see, this is is done via software, unlike other laptops (700m), so there needs to be something already running to detect the lid closed.

I find it worth it to have another small process running in order to rest my screen once in a while.

How do you do this?

Go to RUN and type SERVICES.MSC and press OK.

Then see if the NVIDIA Device Driver Service is STARTED. If it isn't, right-click it and go to PROPERTIES and change it to AUTOMATIC. Then everytime you start up it should automatically run.

My nVidia service is on automatic, it's started.

LCD still stays on when the lid is closed.
