HP dv5000t vs HP dv6000z

Thread Starter
I've got it narrowed down to the dv5000t or the dv6000z.
Which would be best for my needs which are, I play Runescape all the time, download music & high school homework.

Is the graphics card in the 6000 alright to play Runescape?
256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7200

Thanks for any advice you can give on this matter.

Suggest you:

A: This thru this thread and links:

Mobile Graphics Card Comparison Chart

If you're looking for a gaming laptop, Or doing graphic intensive work the GPU should be your top priority. GPU is the "video card" for those of you who don't know.

Even if you're not into games, keep in mind that Windows itself "likes" a fast video card and the new Vista will be VERY graphics intensive.
For anything that is graphic intensive the GPU is more important than the CPU in most cases.

And B:

Buy from Costco.com, they have a 180 return window, instead of only 21-days if purchased direct from HP.

Here is the link to the Costco CTO (Custom to Order) page. You can also buy "pre-built systems... just look around on their site.

Here's what I have it narrowed down to.
Since I know nothing about computers I'm hoping someone can advise as to which of these would be the best system for my needs.
Thank you in advance!

dv5000t

Intel (R) Core Duo Processor T2500 (2.0 GHz)

128 MB NVIDIA Ge Force Go 7400

1.0 GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)

120 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive

dv6000z

AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile TL56 (1.80 GHz/512KB)

256 MB NVIDIA Gel Force Go 7200

1.0 GB DDR2 SDRAM (2/512MB)

120 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Either of those computers would play RuneScape just fine. You only have to worry about power and speed if you want to play games like BF2 or FarCry, or any of the other high-detail 3D games (I'm not quite up to speed on the newest games...).

Personally, I would wait for the dv6000t... I'm buying a laptop soon, and I'm waiting for the dv9000t because the dv9000z has the AMD Turion 64 X2 which isn't nearly as powerful as the new Intel Core 2 Duo. It's probably the same situation between the dv6000z and the dv6000t.

Thanks Ricky maybe I should wait.
I could use my old computer for a few more months or so.
Thank you your suggestion.

Yeah, that was exactly what I have been thinking too. My current computer is a 2.13ghz AMD Athlon XP, so it will do nicely until the dv9000t comes out. Of course, the wait is HORRIBLE, thinking of the sleek new laptop that I will have in a few weeks... It's like torture. But I'm forcing myself to wait, cause I have read all about the Core 2 Duo (codenamed Merom) and it sounds like the best processor yet.

If you have a machine to use, waiting would be the smart thing to do for several reasons, release of the model you want... and then waiting so you don't get the first one off the line. First one of any new model while neat to have being more "buggy" than units produced later in the production run.

Intel Core Duo 2 being worth the wait... and remember that Core Duo 2, the SECOND wave with a bus speed of 800mhz, instead of the current 667 is just around the corner along with all kinds of improvements to battery life, "instant on" boot time, due to hybrid hard drives.

PS: Airforce77,
Hope the links I posted helped you. Within those links is a site that tells you what GPU (Notebook video card) will run what game. Also within those links are info that tells you how to compare say for example a 6800 series Nivida to a 7200 used in the dv6000z.

Now you would think that a 7200 (or 7400) series would be faster than a 6800 series, right? It being after all in the "7000" series.... bigger number and all..... If you read thru the info you will find you'd be wong big time on that.

On the CPU's, the Intel chip is still the better option.

On last thing, think long and hard about buying direct from HP

Having a 180 return window when you purchase thru www.Costco.com comes in mighty handy if you are having problems and the mfg is jerying you around.

Can you link me (us) to some info about that "instant on" thing you are talking about? I was planning on getting just one 100gb 7200rpm drive (cause all dual options are 5400rpm) but maybe I should consider dual drives... Or maybe a 7200 and a 5400... I know the 7200 will reduce battery life, especially alongside another hard drive, but I definitely would like to look into this instant on stuff that you talk about.

(i hope 5400 and 7200 are the right numbers, I'm writing these off the top of my head)

I wouldn't mind picking up a DV5000t with the T2500 and Go7400 video...then just buy my own 2GB of 667mhz RAM and 80GB 7200rpm drive.

WeAreNotAlone - Thank you for the link! Interesting and you were right I would have thought the higher number would be better
I'm going to wait since there is actually nothing wrong with my laptop. I think I'll add some memory to it for the time being.

Vista and Hybrid hard drive and you should come up with the details.

Hybrid Hard drive having flash memory in which part of the OS is saved to, Sort of like hibernation mode... but instead of saving the data to spinning hard drive disc, it's saved to flash memory which makes the machine boot faster, plus it's supposed to increase battery life.

I think to really make this decsion you need to go play with them yourself. The classy look of the new models are tempting, but after really playing with them I found the older models to be better for me.

I have almost zeroed in on the dv5200TX in India (sold as dv5000 series in US) but I was very much impressed by the new imprint finish looks of HP's recent models (dv2000). And that's where I began to wonder whether I should wait for the dv6000 to arrive in India or to go ahead and purchase the dv5200.

Is it worth to wait for the new look models or to go ahead and buy the current models coz I think except for the looks nothing else is going to change?

vikingjunior: Can u elaborate on what is better in the new and old models?
