Hi guys,

This may seem like a simple question but please bear with me. How do you guys determine if you do/ do not need a dedicated graphics card?

I don't play games on my notebook and the most graphic intensive thing I can think of doing is editing some miniDV tapes and posting them online. Other things that may require graphics? Webcam and photo editing

Given these facts, am I better off saving my money by getting an integrated card or should I get dedicated?

Thanks!

Well, first off, a dedicated card will allow you to run Windows Vista with its bells and whistles on.

get dedicated. one of my laptops is dedicated, and one is shared, I can do some basic gaming on the shared (AOE2, Genesis and SNES emulators) but tasks like editing 5mp photos in GIMP is LAGGY! So perhaps you don't need the latest and greatest 7900gtx 512mb, but something along the lines of an X700 will more than be enough for you.

You won't need dedicated. You can do all that just fine with an integrated card. For photo editing just just max out the ram and you should be good.

I always suggest dedicated graphics, because they are not an upgradeable part and the difference is huge, a 7600 go/X1600 will provide say 10 times the performance of a GMA950 in applications that use the graphics card. It's better to have and not use, then to need and not have if you ask me.

Thanks guys. What's another $300 spread over the next 3 years right? I'm going to go w/ the dedicated graphics card.

you do not need dedicated if you dont plan on having vista. photo and movie editing rely on processor speed mostly and having a dedicated card is not going to help

...dedicated does overall improve the feel of hte system. he doesn't need x1600 or 7900.....but an older gen x600 or x700 would even be overkill...

integrated is fine. cheap out.

I did!

I'd say get dedicated, just so it doesent eat up extra system time. Technically for what you do you dont need it, in my opinion, I just prefer to have a "peppier" system.

You dont need any huge graphics card. A tiny x1300 or 7300 (this generation) or a x300 or 6400 (last gen) would be more than enough.

Get dedicated. It'll improve overall performance by a lot. Like Rastlin said "It's better to have and not use, then to need and not have."

With Vista coming if you plan to upgrade then you will use. And under Vista having a dedicated graphics chip will make the whole system more responsive.

I'd say if you're undecided, it's better to have the extra money in your pocket

I just came back from a vacation where I spent close to 8k. So right now, my value of money is not so great.

I plan on keeping my laptop for 3-4 years. By then, I *hope* to have migrated to vista. Guess I should get dedicated then huh?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I'm going to spend the extra money and get the W7J w/ dedicated instead of the DV2000T without.

Now I just have to decide whether or not I should wait till the end of the month to see if prices drop once the new chipset comes out.

No offense, but in this day and age, i cant really see a laptop lasting for 3-4 years before it is badly outdated....
