9300 "secure digital storage device"

on my 9300 (i've tried posting this problem before but couldn't fix the problem) my sd slot will not read two of my sd cards. I am positive both cards work b/c they work in my 700m. In My computer, it does not show up. In device manager, the SDA controller is workign fine. However, under disk drives, Secure Digital Storage Device has an exclamation point next to it. It would not update the drivers through windows. Any ideas how to fix this?
I tried installing Dell notebook system software but that didnt work eitehr...

could somebody possibly test their sd card in their 9300. Check in device manager under disk drive and check what drivers the "secure digital storage device" is using? and possibly send them to me? thanks in advance.

Do you have SP2 installed? I know it was real goofy on my M170 when I had SP1, but as soon as I update to SP2 all was good......

You can try using google to find the drivers. I was looking for a little bit, but it's late and I was getting bored.... Sorry.

You could always try reinstalling the notebook system software. it might refresh the usb driver on your system. it can't hurt at least. newest version is available :

Mine worked from the get-go, and the driver came from MS. The SD does not show up in my Disk Drives section.

I remember that mine used to show up as well before I did my bios flash to the gen2. now it doesn't show up in the "my computer" but when i insert a card it still picks it up fine.

*bump*

Could I kindly ask others to try their sd cards with their 9300s?

Just to share: I recently bought a 2GB PNY sd card and plugged it in... it shows up as "secure digital storage device" under disk drives with a yellow exclamation point. Under properties it says the "device cannot start (code 10)". I also have a 16MB MMC card, but the 9300 cannot read MMC cards, just SD (a note to others in this thread; maybe that helps?) This is my first try at getting SD cards to work with the 9300.

On a related note I also bought a USB card reader and plugged the 2GB sd card into that and into the 9300. Again, the USB reader shows up as removeble media with the yellow exclamation point and code 10. However, this turns out to be the case because the 9300's usb ports are not powered. Plugging the same gadget into my desktop with the 2GB sd card in works fine.

So... I know the 2GB sd card works and it is not read by the 9300. I have just updated the 9300's system software and that did not help. There is a knowledge base article on dell.com that mentions something about Ricoh drivers -- I do not have that showing up in device manager and there is also no way to install it on my machine as dell says I should get the driver from the "drivers + utilities cd", something they neglected to ship me.

Does anyone have experience with using sd cards with the 9300 and have any experience +/- with getting them to work?

I love this machine (bought it when they first came out), but this is frustrating as hell...

It looks like XP has a problem with reading some SD cards. There's a hotfix posted at Microsoft's site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921413/en-us

But you'll have to contact Microsoft to get the fix. I haven't tried it yet -- I'm posting now in case I forget later on. I'll edit later if it works.

I have a 512MB SD card that I have used in my 9300 SD slot without a problem.

um, im pretty sure the 9300 usb ports are powered. I run an M-Audio Trigger Finger and an Evolution 449 as well as charge my phone via usb. Am I wrong?

Yeas, the USB ports can supply a maximum of 500mA each...

Naturally Microsoft's email support crashes in the last step. Will have to wait to try to get the hotfix tomorrow. I really, really dislike having to put my credit card forward and risk being charged $45. The note does say if a support rep determines a specific hotfix resolves the issue they shouldn't charge me. But still, wouldn't it be so much easier to add a link to the hotfix page to have it downloadable? Even if it's still in testing, just add a disclaimer...
