Very cheap notebooks---do they exist online?

Hello,

My brother just had me build him a new desktop, so he's got the power angle covered. For school though, he'd like a laptop---a very crappy one, that just word processes and internet surfs over a wireless connection.

I've seen such laptops in stores for $400, and sometimes even lower (usually with rebates). Last time I looked around online, you really couldn't go below $600 or so. Can anyone prove me wrong, or am I better just staying in brick-and-mortar stores for this kind of thing?

Thanks,

You are better off sticking with brick and mortar stores for really cheap laptops.

the B130 can run pretty cheap and in many cases into the 400's

Check out some basic second hand lappie's you can get the bare basic system for next to nix now - as long as it has a pentium 4-M CPU he should get some battery life - try and avoid Celeron processers as they suck battery power, but then again they are cheaper!!!

Thanks,
go with dell, this is a good reason why. check out the dell outlet when you can.

I just bought an IBM X20 on ebay for $200 and absolutely love it. It is very small, light, and does everything I ask it to do while I'm at school

Acer = Cheap

Yeah,

I have seen a few Acer's at Wal-Mart the other day for like $400.....

HP has sales now....14' lappy for $399

Not to troll but I saw a bunch of cheap Acer's given out to a college class around where I live. They don't last long. My neighbors motherboard went out within a few months and numerous others failed too.

be careful you get what you pay for...

Acer's aren't bad, per se. You just get what ya' pay for

true. could have happened with any company... The hundreds of dell desktops they recently leased for my college's labs (cheaply I might add) have been burning through motherboards left and right... Damn you should hear when one of those optiplex's heat up and the fan goes on high.... It is literally as loud as my vaccuum at home. Makes the lab quite unproductive at times.

I think it partly has to matter with how the laptop (system) is engineered. The more you have to build and the lower the final system cost, the more you tend to cut corners and costs a bit here and there (design, testing, etc...) resulting in crappier quality. Parts for mass produced systems will be plentiful and cheaper so replacement part costs will be lower as well.

In contrast, a more expensive laptop has a reason to be built better. There is less demand compared to more budget friendly systems, there tends to be less parts available (xps gen1/9100 for example, and buildwise that thing was a tank), and they tend to generate more heat, requiring higher quality designs to accomodate higher end needs making it more cost effective to build with a higher quality level to avoid future expenditures (warranty claims).

Anyway, just like we all said... ya get what you pay for...

I did show my buddy in the IT dept at my school my 1710 and he had to grab a tissue to wipe the drool away... He is going to request a M90 with the 2500 card cause I found a way for him to "justify" the expenditure He "needs" a mobile high end platform with the capabilities of fully testing and running all software the campus currently licenses including cad, adobe, bryce, and the new Video Game Design Degree Program
