Power schemes

A friend of mine just purchased an Asus Lamborghini laptop and he has more power schemes available than my M90. He has "Gaming performance", "High Performance", etc.

Are these settings just purely battery life related or do they actually increase performance? What is your system set to?

It's probably just software like the quickset feature on Dell laptops. Windows will do just fine in handling power schemes, it's just a little more customizable with vendor-specific software. For instance, with quickset you can set up a power scheme to deactivate (or activate) your internal NIC and wireless whether on AC or battery power.....

Well, I'm actually talking about the Windows ones. The ones from the Power Management of Windows. I am wondering if there is any performance increase by setting the scheme to Power Mode, or Portable Mode, etc.

What are ya'llls set to?

The only real benefit of setting it to Always On or Home/Office Desk is that it will stop speedstepping your proc so it can run full blast. Other than that, I do not see much difference.

FWIW, I set mine to Always On when playing games, etc but it is usually on Portable/Laptop when doing everyday tasks (IE, word processing, etc) to keep the heat to a minimum....

That depends on the laptop. Some machines (typically ultra-portables, but maybe also some battery-chewing gaming machines) have the ability to reduce clockspeeds for the CPU and/or GPU, often below what SpeedStep would do. Some Sonys can also reduce their memory clock rate for maximum battery life.

As a general rule, there are no secret power schemes that would allow you to increase the performance of your Dell above what you are already seeing when plugged in.

does dell max battery use speedstep or does it reduce clock speed to minimum and not vary it w/ tasks?
