Buy trim and pump it up?

So after reading this forum for a couple of days, I wanted to make sure that my conclusions are correct.

Since I need a mobile office and video editor, would the correct way to buy be;

1) Concentrate my money on processor, video card and screen size then,

2) Upgrade the ram myself, (which is rediculously priced from the laptop manufacture)

3) I plan to get a smaller HD (60 or 80gig) since I plan to edit off an external, since most of my projects are well above the 90gig mark.

I build my own desktop systems and have for years. I've never upgraded a laptop, but I know there are many guides out there. I don't know if some laptops are easier to upgrade than others or not, I'll continue to read on that.

Thanks for taking time to read this, are my conclusions pretty decent?

I'd go one step further, and find any 'special requirements' of the software you intend to use, I.E. 64 bit encoder? Multi Threaded? Input Control Surface (mouse? tablet? joystick? etc.)...Because if the software is 'happy' with the system it will be a lot more stable.

Even though that will be like passifying my in-laws, that's a very good point. Thanks.
