Core 2 duo on the SZ?

I was wondering if any of you have heard of when Sony plans to start shipping the SZ with the Merom? I didn't find anything on their official website. Thanks

It doesn’t look like the Core 2 Duo processors are going to be launched until the end of August, keep in mind that they were announced a few weeks ago, not launched. How quickly they make it into Sony laptops depends if Sony is a launch partner with Intel, I don’t know if Sony is or not.

If Sony is a launch partner with Intel you’ll see the core 2 duo available in as many models as the supply allows on the launch day. If they aren’t a launch partner you may have to wait an extra 2-3 weeks for the core 2 duos to make it into Sony notebooks.

Well my college starts in late september so I was hoping to be able to buy my laptop before then. If sony won't release it until october I may have to rethink the Sony SZ altogether and maybe get another laptop that would come with the Merom.

Well if you really like the SZ I wouldn’t get something you didn’t like as much just because it has the Core 2 Duo processor. Core 2 Duo isn’t exactly a quantum leap ahead of the current Core Duo. From what I have read it seems that you’ll see around a 15% increase in performance for most tasks, I guess you can see a higher increase in performance when doing audio and video encoding. I have a 2.0 GHz Core Duo notebook now and it’s a very fast, I can’t really think of where the 15% performance increase would make my life easier. So if you can’t find a notebook that you like with Merom, just get the Core Duo SZ you won’t be disappointed, unless you plan on spending hours encoding audio and video.

thanks jav1856. I've actually done some more research in this and have come up with the same conclusion. I'm planning to get a 1.83GHz anyways so I guess I don't need the Merom I'm going to stich the the sony sz either way.

.......you buy one for $200 and drop it in instead of paying $3000+ for one with just a chip upgrade vs $2000.

That a good finish?

Sorry, but that does not make sense. First, I'm not sure if you will need one of those bios upgrades. Second, and for that I'm sure, an upgrade to a C2D won't cost you like $1,000 more.

The Sony SZ is a nice notebook. Personally, I would wait as much as I could, since you won't really need it right now. Of course, jav1856 was right, imo: get what you want (SZ), even if it's not a Core 2 Duo.

You can get a nearly identical SZ with a 120gig HD and Yonah CPU for roughly $1,000 less if you shop around at all.
