Resources

So guys, what resources is your system running on? I think by sharing your resources, it'll allow people to see what is essential and what isn't.

Follow the steps below as it will list what svchosts are running as well.
__________________________________________________

For XP Professional, using the Tasklist command:
  • Click Start, Run and type cmd
  • Type tasklist /svc >c:\taskList.txt
  • Copy the tasklist.txt text onto this thread.

I am running 54 resources; here's what mine says:

Okay, I'll play.

Well, on my i9300, I'm dual booting XP in order to get maximum performance when I need it.

So, when I boot into "XP2" (for max performance), I normally have around 20 processes running:

Image Name PID Services
========================= ====== =============================================
System Idle Process 0 N/A
System 4 N/A
smss.exe 568 N/A
csrss.exe 636 N/A
winlogon.exe 660 N/A

cmd.exe 348 N/A
wmiprvse.exe 412 N/A
tasklist.exe 492 N/A

"XP1", the more normal boot, has over 50. No surprise there.....

EDIT: I should add that I use BlackViper's config "Gaming" to set my services for maximum performance.

Wow, nice tip about BlackViper's config. That's what I was aiming to get from this thread. Thanks a lot.

What do you mean dual boot increases peformance? And what do you mean by XP2 and XP1?
Well, dual boot doesn't necessarily increase performance on its own. It's just that I can choose which system to boot into. Either a totally stripped down version of XP, running minimal services and with everything tweaked for performance (no wallpaper, theme service, special visual effects, etc.)

...or I can boot into a more 'normal' XP environment with visual themes, widgets, sound enhancement and on and on. I normally like to work in this type of environment because it looks cool and I enjoy customizing and tweaking it. But, you know, all of these things can add up to a big performance hit--especially on a laptop!

I've partitioned the HDD so that I can boot into either one of 2 XP environments. 'XP1' and 'XP2' are just my names for the configurations, but they could be named anything.

So, if I were planning to play an intensive game or watch a DVD with ffdshow post-processing, say, then I'd boot into XP2 and get the performance increase I need for my preferred settings.

Some people might find it a hassle to reboot just to play a game or watch a DVD, but it really doesn't bother me. It only takes a minute or so. Anyway, hope this all makes sense--and you're welcome!

What does ffdshow do? I didn't know it was that performance intensive.

What about power schemes, what do you usually run on?
ffdshow is very CPU intensive (75%-95% on my i9300's 200GHz PM) as it resizes the DVD image frame by frame using the Lanczoz method to your monitor's resolution, while sharpening and also 3D de-noising it in real time. It can do a lot of other great stuff, too!

Check out this recent NBF thread for more info on ffdshow (see my links there for screenshots and guides):
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread167485.html

AFAIK, power schemes are there to basically conserve power (e.g. battery useage). They won't shut down services or otherwise give you more CPU/memory resources when you need them.

Wow, those screenshots are amazing. Now, can I use it with WMP11? Or do I have to use something like Media Player Classic? I have enjoyed a lot of good times with MPC, but now that I have WMP11, I am wanting to cut down on unecessary programs.
Sorry, I don't know if it works with WMP11 or not (to me almost any program by MS is an unecessary program! But notice I said almost--almost.) Who needs Photoshop when you've got Paint, right?

But, seriously, I know ffdshow works with MPC--my personal favorite--as well as Zoom Player Pro, Nvidia Pure Video, and also TheaterTek DVD.

Did some research and supposedly it works.

I know what you mean regarding Microsoft software, but you should give WMP11 a try. It plays HDV footage as smooth as MPC and it is just about the same in resource hogging. I also really like the new interface and the fact that they took most of the useful features from iTunes like dynamic searching, etc.
One thing I like about MPC is that it can zoom or shift the screen image incrementally (in small steps, BTW) via hotkeys. Can WMP11 do that?

Also, do you have a link on using ffdshow with WMP11? Maybe I'll give it a shot...

Well, I believe it works automatically. Whenever I changed a setting in FFdshow config I would see it imediately alter the video when restarting WMP11. Same way as MPC.

I have tried some of the settings from the thread you've sent me and I haven't really noticed any significant increase in quality. Will it only improve DVD video? What are your settings set to? I would love to see some screenshots from your machine.

How do you guys do this on WinXP Home?

ffdsow will improve AVI, DVD and MPEG2, but I don't know about other codecs. As good as it is, it can only do so much with a crappy source. My screenshots and settings are in this thread:

Shouldn't make any difference using home.
I keep getting tasklist is an invalid program / executable... etc.
Hmm... works fine for me.

Anyway, you could just take a screenshot of the processes in your task manager.

The screenshot won't show what exact processes are behind the svchost.exe. That's why I suggested this.
