Same thing for the 7700. While all the motherboards have the same ports installed, they only work with the right TV tuner card inside. IE I had a coax and s-video in port but they only worked after i ordered my tuner from AW (I ordered seperately since the MJ-12 didn't have the tuner in the configurer).

But the tuner isn't an option on the UK version I was told.
They may not support it. Are you saying you used the S-video port w/o having the tuner installed?
In France, like in UK I think we can't choose the TV tuner but the S-Video In seems to work (I read it on the french web site).

Have you simply tried to install the WDM Driver in the section mutlimedia software of the Nvidia web site (the same than for the Nvidia VIVO card)?? Perhaps it will work exactly like on the desktop?

I hope this S-Video In will work, because I envisaged to use it

I am from the US with a tuner and a working svideo. What I was saying is that the UK site does not let you choose the tv tuner as a option when you order. Therefore, if the tuner is required for svideo, then Alienware is doing false advertising by stating that the notebooks in the UK come with a working svideo in port.

I don't think downloading drivers or any such thing will help. The tech support guy told me explicitly that the ports are useless without the tuner. He did, however, say that it will be an upgrade option on the m9700. Still... MEH!

Thanks everyone for your help on this. Now that I have established I need a tuner I will contact alienware regarding the fact that this was one of the features that I purchased the machine for as according to the product info the system come supplied with working svideo in.

Will let you all know what happens.

I'm also interested in this. Just took delivery of an Evesham Quest Nemesis yesterday with MCE installed. Do you think it would be possible to source the actual TV tuner card from the states? Would it work ok with UK TV sources etc.

Mike...

Actually I believe it would not. Because over here we use the NTSC form of cable and I believe the UK uses the PAL version. Completely different inputs and formats. You may be able to find adapters and software to convert.

mikecad- it'd be easier for you to juse use an external USB tv tuner. Less hassle and they aren't huge boxes like they used to be.

I just tried that - installed the drivers from nVidia and XP did then detect new hardware (the two bits necessary for the nVidia stuff)..

However the actual VIVO device driver fails to start with a 'Code 10', so perhaps the hardware doesn't actually support VIVO, or there's a driver incompatibility with AW's custom video drivers.

I think a threat of a talk with the UK version of the better business bureau with regards to false advertising would sort things out nicely.

This is one of a few posts I've seen by you talking about false advertising and full refunds from AW.

Are you McGruff the crime dog?

Well so far I have tried calling aw about this but not getting anywhere!!!

First time I called I spoke to customer services who said that if the s-video wasnt working I needed to speak to tech support. I explained that I KNOW why its not working cos its not there (Doh!) and that I wanted to know why on the site it claims to be a feature of the m9700. But she was just no help whatsoever!!!!

Second time, I got this guy who said I had to speak to tech support cos it was way over his head?! Tried to put me through to them and came back saying it was too busy!

Have emailed them instead!

That was actually my only post about refunds (unless I remember incorrectly). But on the UK site it does mention "the m9700 also has S-Video In and Out" as stated next to the camera on this page: http://www.alienware.co.uk/product_d...EFAULT#pdp-nav

Edit: My bad, I did talk about refunds with regards to the coax port being non home standard. But you do have to sell a working product as described in the sales materials. You can't boast about automatic doors and locks in a car but sell it with crank windows.

Just would have been nice to make use of the existing coaxial input and keep things internal, I hate ports that dont do anything, it's like having a blank button in your car which would do something if you'd gone for power folding mirrors

I agree. Can't wait to get some firewire stuff and a purposeful PCMCIA card.

On another note concerning this laptop, I'm glad it has the new ExpressCard standard, but I'm slightly annoyed at the fact that nobody's selling ExpressCard peripherals yet and those that are actually being made are hard to find. Not to mention the price. A Firewire 800 card for ExpressCard is somewhere between 65-80 bucks.

Due to me being sick of waiting for Alienware to reply to my emails or resolve the issue by phone, I have now informed trading standards that they are falsely stating that the m9700 has a working s-video input. I plan to return my laptop to Alienware asap!! Im just awaiting their advice on how I can make sure I can defo get out of the buy now pay later contract im in and get my deposit back!

I was pleased with the machine and you can see this from my initial review, but I cant bring myself to let this go, and the way that their customer service team (in the UK at least) act is totally lacklustre!
