help me with spyware!!

okay this is really starting to annoy me!! My usualy combo of AVG and/or Ad-Aware and Spybot arn't getting rid of the spyware on my laptop. It's your standard pop-ups advertising online gambling adn the like and a new one I've never seen before with a tray icon flashing a hazard sign and bubbles coming up saying "download this spyware killer biatch!!".

Anyway moral of the story is anyone got any suggestions save reformatting? It's really starting to get to me as he popups minimise games and when you're in the middle of a melee/drawing a bead on someone that's NOT what you want to happen.

I've heard some good reviews about Microsoft Defender and from the situation your in anythink is wortha go to save a re-format. Also, incase you haven't already done so try running AVG, spybot in safe mode.

Try using Hijackthis.

XoftSpy works pretty good - maybe the best at the moment. Get it on eMule, try it out, then buy it if you like it. Fixes about 8,500 malwares.

This may help you.

I found that Spysweeper has gotten rid of spyware that Ad-aware and Spybot couldn't for me in the past.

Also, go to Start>Run>type in "services.msc"

This should take you to all the processes running.. Check for anything shady in there and disable it. I also use CCleaner to check all my startup programs.. Delete the ones that might be related to the spyware. Then reboot to safe mode and clean with spyware programs again.

Just restore your most recent Acronis True Image. Why screw around with spyware removal?

Boot your computer in safemode and then scan using your antivirus and spyware remover.

righto will try the safe mode thing as even Defender can't find anything. will report back

edit: Though I got rid of the random task bar one, there are still popups everynow and then (although more infrequently than before) so I suppose I should just keep doing that now and then till they're all gone.

edit#2: FREAKING HELL!! IT'S BACK!! DAMN YOU TO F***ING HELL YOU LITTLE TASKBAR BASTARD!! FRICK! now what?

Your best option will to backup your data, reformat and do a fresh install. Also might i suggest switching to a new antivirus like Kaspersky antivirus 6.0.

Copy a part of the popup message verbatim, enclose it in " " and search for it on Google.
Chances are (if its been around the block a few times) that someone will have identified the micreant spyware and posted steps to eradicate the bugger.
Otherwise if googling doesn't bring up anything then suck it up, reformat and invest in a decent spyware/virus protection and setup preiodic data backups.
Cheers.

Sounds like a virus I recently had to clean off a computer here at work. If you can, try and do a compete virus scan from a different computer, then google anything it comes up with and look for instructions on how to manually undo what it's done (especially stuff in the registry) if there's no removal tool around.

A virus scan from a different computer? how does that work? other than that after a restart the taskbar thing seems to be gone *touches every piece of wood in sight*. I just got a pop-up again but run ad-aware and it found two critical pieces so we'll see.

thanks for your help

Network the PC's & scan the problematic one from one that you know is clean. Or pull the HDD out of the problematic one and put it into a USB housinig, attach it to a clean PC and scan it that way. The scanning PC may not be able to completely clean the infected one, but it should at least be able to find the virus & tell you what virus it is so you can google information on removing it.

thanks everyone for your help but SpyBot just got an updated virus database that found the spyware. Thanks for the help anyway.
