when they start selling their core 2's will we be able to send in our xps's to have our cpu upgraded (for a price of course)

You could probably purchase it a lot cheaper through a 3rd party. Dell will most likely sell you the part, but as far as sending it in for an upgrade, I doubt it.

I don't see much value in upgrading at this point IMHO. There is simply not a big enough difference at present between Yonah and Merom as they are both based on the Napa platform. If you are using certiain types of very CPU intensive applications, require 64-bit compatibilty, or you have a Yonah that is at the lower end of the spectrum you could benefit by the upgrade. Unless you can really benefit from such an upgrade I would save your money and upgrade to a new notebook when the next version of Merom come out on the Santa Rosa platform (next generation chipset, FSB, and wireless). This is where Merom will start to really shine. However current Merom notebooks won't be easily upgradable to Santa Rosa since it is a whole new chipset.

when prices go way down , i might get the T2700, but i am happy for now

don't listen to them, waste your money?

Having a merom processor will increase your resale value however, should you decide to sale the laptop later.

i doubt it will be worth the cost of buying a merom in the first place

Yes for a brief time as any machine will deprecieate. If you already have a decent dual core and you upgrade to merom In my opinion you are throwing away cash and for resale also as the second release of merom will make our machines outdated and the depreciation will happen reguardless. You will never make out it will be a waste. The only way a merom upgrade is worth it is if you have a lowend processor or you need 64 bit aps. As others have stated.

Just my 2 cents

Hi Rogue Blade,

I just read your posting regarding your XPS M1710. To answer your question about upgrading the processor, if your order has shipped, you would have to return your system and place a new order with the processor you are interested in. If your order has not shipped, you can call our sales department and make the processor upgrade change to your existing order. Please email me directly if you have any other questions regarding this.

Best Regards,
Marie
