Will they wipe your hd when replacing your mobo

hey everyone,

I am about to send my 9860 in for repair (ext warranty, going to micromedics (?sp)). I have some stuff on the hd that has not been backed up and I am afraid to just send it in to them. I opted for a raid 0 stripe, so I was not able to slave it to a desktop computer to pull the data off.

So, I was wondering if it would be safe for me to just send it in or is it possible to pull the data from the hd?

thanks ahead

They won't if you tell them not to. I've had two motherboard replacements on my 9860. Both times, I asked them not to format the hard drive. Didn't matter, I got the machine back and the hard drive was not "wiped", but Windows OS was hosed both times. The first time recquired a full new install of Windows; the 2nd time, a repair install worked just fine.

I had the Mobo replaced on my 9860 and didnt specifically tell them to not wipe the drives. I have raid 0 as well. It came back fine and dandy, working just like when it left. This was a long time ago, i know now they are using newer Mobo revisions, dont know if that affects anything.

great thanks for the info everyone. it sounds like I probably wont have a problem, so I think I may just call them and tell them not to erase it if possible. I may also see if they can back it up if they feel it may be erased.

Should I call or just write a letter and close the lid on it so that it is visible when they open it up?

Rx get ready to do some waiting though. I am going thru this whole ordeal now as well. Micro Medics are nice and professional but you are going to have to wait a long time to get this repair done. You can read all about my horror show in this thread:

Do you have access to a large sized external drive or a network location to do full HD back up's via Windows XP Backup feature?

that would serve your purpose, along with peace of mind for backup's sake anyway.

Boogie he has raid so he would need a sat raid controller as well for both of his drives. since I think he said he went with stipeing and not duplication. ( Speed vs Backups)

Drowis is correct, I opted for performance over the ability to pull the hd and back it up. I was doing good by continously backing up my hd, but I let it slip for a couple months and now I am paying for it. I intend to purchase an external hd for future use though.

Drowis - yes I had read your thread and feel very sorry for you, it is difficult to be away from a laptop for that long. I am debating calling phillips and seeing if I can just pay upfront costs and send it to Sager and have them reimburse me. I have not sent it out yet and I may give them a call monday b/c I dont know if I will be able be away from it for that long. I guess I could always go and buy a $399 laptop from circuit city/bestbuy or something.

well get this one. For some reason the laptop was sent back to micro medics after the estamate was done. Now they are waiting to hear from Warantech to get the ok for the money to get it repaired and then they will send it back to Sager to channge the motherboard. This is really strange. Why wouldnt they leave it at sager until they recieved the ok instead of delaying it more for the shipping costs. They also tell me that it has a dead HD in it and Micromedics will be the ones to fix that so does this mean that it will then ship back to micromedics again after it leaves Sager and I will finnally recieve my machine but it will not have an operating system on it?

can you believe these aftermarket.warranty companies. to my knowledge, insurance companies are out to make money. yet it doesnt seem that way with how they are wsating money/time and not to mention pissing off the customer.

Well, good luck and I hope it all works out for you.
