New revision of Sony laptops? When?

Hi there. I'm going to be buying a laptop for University in the next couple of months. I want something small and light that has a good sized screen for watching DVDs and a nice keyboard. The Sony VGN-FE21M seems to fit the bill nicely.

My only concern is, are Sony about to bring out a new range of laptops? If so, when is that likely to be? I've seen a lot of offers on the FE range recently, does that mean they're about to be superceded?

Thanks for any advice,

Pete

Hi Pete - I posted a similar question a couple of days ago on this forum without a response as I was after an FE21S. I eventually managed to speak to somebody worth speaking to at Sony however, who said that most of the FE21 range was now discontinued and although it was likely that they'll bring out new models within a couple of weeks she had no details as to the pricing/specs.

I'm now going to wait for the news models - as apart from anything else I'm now unable to purchase the FE21S anywhere (it looks like most vendors have now dropped the FE21M as well so you may have the same issue).

Regards,
Tom

Thanks a lot for the help Tom I think I'd be best to wait too as I won't need to purchase mine until the end of September at the latest. Hopefully we'll get more power/reduced size and even more functionality in the new models

Sony tends to be a bit slower than other manufacturers with releasing the newest tech. So you may be waiting a while.

Looks like Sony have released laptops with Merom chips in the US:

I hope that the spec of the FE machine improves when they release Merom based laptops in the UK. With integrated graphics the FE770 has a lower spec than the current offerings. I think I'd rather have dedicated graphics rather than the Merom.

Yeah, it puzzles me that they would release this partially lame version of the FE series. Integrated graphics and a ECO-Brite screen don't make me want to pull the trigger.

I'm waiting to buy the FE when they put the Geforce back in and up the ante with the Merom. I have been looking at the Macbook and you can get a pretty decent system for about $1200, but I don't want to give up the 7600 Go card and the Xbrite screen. Dammit SONY, hurry up!

Just to let people know... I spoke to a Sony rep yesterday in the UK and they said mid-October for the new chips. I can't wait that long so went for an SZ2XP

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!! SonyStyle UK are now displaying laptop specs with Core 2 Duo processors available for preorder - delivery early Oct.

Can you not order an SZ3x 2.33 GHZ Core 2 duo from www.geekstuff4u.com in the U.K.?

The SZ370 is freely available here in the U.S. at CompUSA. Wish they carried the SZ360 though.

I've just ordered the new FE31Z from SonyStyle. Apart from the Merom processor, the 200Gb disk, and the 7600 graphics card it also appear to be uniformly charcoal grey in color - which is great. For some reason I thought the white/black combination of the casing on the older FE laptops looked a bit cheap.

This is the laptop I've been waiting weeks for. I can't wait for it to be delivered and when it is (early Oct hopefully) I'll post a review.
