HP 8440 with UXGA screen

I'll soon be given the above laptop (through work) mainly to be used on graphics and video apps (where the WUXGA 1920x1200 res will come in handy) and because it's not too heavy (I travel a lot) - but it only comes with a 15.4" screen - the next model up with 17" screen is too heavy). The graphics chip is an ATI FireGL 5200 with 256MB. However, I do also need to use this for wordprocessing and accessing the internet and am concerned about the small text on this screen size at the native resolution - (in most cases I won't have access to a large external monitor). I'm not interested in running games..

Questions: Is this a good machine (for the above use) and does anyone know how well this particular laptop/GPU will scale down the resolution for text editing if required - ie will it be 'adequate' or a bit fuzzy?

Thanks.

Yes, if you reduce the resolution the screen will likely become fuzzy.

But if you are using Word, Excel, and such for office work, you have no problems, because text in them is fully scalable. If you use Firefox for Internet browsing, you can easily increase text size. But I believe that you get accustomed to the resolution and don't need many adjustments. In fact, it's mostly a matter of how far you look at the screen. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure the machine will be great for you.

Thanks - it's just that several people on these forums seem to reckon that WUXGA on a 15.4" screen is way overkill for general use and can be an eye strain. I currently have a standard XGA laptop and find it hopeless for screen estate (lots of scrolling) but am worried that this move may be too much the other way. Unfortunately I can't see or demo one of these laptops first.

After using my 1680x1050 screen I can say with complete certainty that if I were shopping for a 15.4 I would consider nothing less then 1680x1050. 1280x800 looks completely disgusting to me now, no exaggeration. So much scrolling, it's intolerable lol. I think that resolution would be high but probably useable - just expect to up the DPI to like 110 or 115%. I upped mine a little bit to like 105 though I didn't really need to. Besides how many other 15.4 users can have 4 800x600 windows open at the same time with space left over! lol
