6800Ultra vs. 7900GS?

I'm looking at upgrading from my M170, with a 6800 Ultra video card, to an M1710, with the 7900 GS.

I'm wondering if there is a big performance leap between the 6800 Ultra and the 7900 GS. Anyone know of any benchmarks? THanks.

what happens when you search "7900 benchmark"?

Can't find anything that compares the performance between the two.

Starting from an Ultra model, I wouldn't go near a "GS" any edition, let alone one that's only one generation newer :

Wow, bunch of noobs in this thread. The 7900GS is great, and can O/C to 7900GTX status. Also, the 7900GS can get around 6,500 3dMark05, if I remember right. And it's 2 generations ahead, duh.

Yep, OC'd the 7900 GS can break 9000 3DMark05 and 5000 3DMark06.

The 7900GS at STOCK speeds is only a tad faster than the 6800Ultra. In my case I'm still using a Desktop with a 6800GT overclocked to be faster than an Ultra and that doesn't exactly smoke a 7900GS but in that case the desktop flavor of the 6800 series is faster.

Wich is the reason I'm gunning for a laptop with a 7900GTX, namely I've been putting off my purchase to go after a Meron equiped M90 once they are available.

I'm not planning on overclocking, so in that case, how does the 7900GS compare with the 6800Ultra, both at stock speeds?

A tad? WTF is "a tad" and how is that helpful? A stock Go 6800 Ultra benchs around 5200 in 3DMark05 and a stock Go 7900 GS benchs around 6500 in 3Dmark05. The 7900 GS is about 25% faster. Maybe "a tad" = 25%.

Plain and simple yes the 7900 GS is better because it supports shader models that the 6800 ultra does not support along with a few extras. That help in graphics with newer games which can make use of. So it is not about just benches either compairing the ultra and 7900 .I would sugjest the 512 MB 7900 GTX if you do get a M 1710. But I feel it is a smart move as I got a good price for my XPS Gen 2 when I upgraded to the M 1710.

Scootch Faster = 10%
Tad Faster = 25%
Much Faster = 50%
A LOT FASTER = 100%
Will kick its ass, have sex with its mom and then flip off your boss faster = 101%+

Nice!

My FX 2500M benchs at 9666 in 3DMark05. Is there something in between "A LOT" faster and "Much" faster because it's an 85% increase over the Go 6800 Ultra.

what makes a notebook card different than a desktop card? a GPU is a GPU and calls for a certain memory spec by OEM partners. If the hardware solution in a notebook deviates from the manufacturers spec, then they can't call it a 6800, or a 7800.. or whatever. only mechanical difference would be any throttling or speed stepping
