I'm having trouble deciding...

I just bought for $600 a Toshiba MS105-S3041 at Office Depot. It turns out that just three days later, there is a new deal at the store, also for $600, the Toshiba A105-S4164. I believe they said that I could return the one I just bought for the new offer. What's the difference? The one in the store now has twice as much RAM, 1GB, a 15.4" screen instead of a 14.1", and a battery life at about two thirds of the one I just bought.

This is my first notebook purchase, and I was hesitant about buying one with a 14.1" screen that seemed small. Now, right when I found it acceptable, they come out with the bigger screen, double memory for the same price...so I'm looking for some advice here, maybe from someone who has been through the rounds a few times -- do you think it's better to have a bigger screen but bulkier laptop? Does double the memory really make a difference in a non-gaming machine? Is two hours more battery life really worth it?

Welcome!

Depends on what you are going to use it for. Do you want a laptop for pure mobility? Taking it on road trips or something? Do you want it as basically a desktop replacement computer at home while still having the mobility to move around your house?

You should have at least 1GB of RAM anyway for XP. 512MB may be enough for you though, depending on how much you multi task or what programs you use.

Bigger screen IMO is better. Easier on the eyes too but it does take down your battery life.

Battery life wise, meh, I doubt you'll be on the machine for more than two and a half hours (maybe, I don't know) so I wouldn't be concerned about battery life.

IMO, I'd trade that in for the other one.

I'm using it for 1) desktop replacement for college, and 2) carrying around college. So something in-between the two options you mentioned.

RAM, idk, I'd be okay with upgrading not a big deal, my main issue is the screen.

oh well it doesn't look like I can exchange anyway...

As mentioned it'll depend on how you feel about carrying it around &everybody has their own opinion on what is portable. Personally, I have a 14" (nonwide screen) laptop and do not want anything bigger becasue I carry it around daily. My older laptop was about the weight that the 15.4" are now and I noticed the difference in my back pack right away. Personaly I would stick with the 14" for the way I use my laptop.
