This one had a bad HDD and that was all(lol) so I took one out of another(started with 10 broke computers all the same) and this one was as good as new, better after getting the garbage programs out(lean and mean ) runs so well I am using it as my travel computer.

Wife gets onto to me for dumpster diving...

Several months ago it was garbage day... She was in the car and I spied a 18 inch flat panel display... on the very next block from where I live... Wife says what are you stopping for, I backed up VERY quickly and thru it in the back of the car (before she had a chance to say NO)

Got it home and once I sourced a power brick for the unit it worked perfect....

I think what happened was it got throw out due to a bad power brick, along in the pile being (2) dishnetwork boxes so I think they may have been hit by lighting, the owners getting new units..

The Gov't sells them in lots of 10 on bid sometimes you win sometimes you lose.
The things I found in this project:

Ram- Hyundai ?-18(256s)4 bad /(2 good-512s so now do not have to buy which I put in the good laptop (see pic above).
Screens are the first to go as out of 10-1 was very good condition-4 might work-5 trashed/bad.
Hard drives 40gig-10-6 good-4 bad.
Mobos/CPUs Intel Calistoga-G i940GML board
w/Mobile Intel Celeron M 410
-10-6 good-4 bad none trashed yet.
Keyboard (mats?) 10-7 good-3 trash.

Just for book keeping project cash outlay:
50.00 bid
tools a must have-non-conductive watch tools,
lighted magnifier lens w/stand, non-static pad for the bench with a strap for me.$125.00-
and a 10 dollar lic.to salvage gov.property for non-profit.
Total-$185.00 plus alotta gas.
And some of the most fun in years-priceless

Sounds pretty clear to me. I understood what maxfolder was saying. Max was saying that he bought a "lot" of junk computers,(lot=10) and was stating how many items were good or bad. For example,

I try to keep my post short and to the point and am sorry if it is unclear to anyone, please PM me anytime as building computers to Fold and end cancer is important on a personal level to me.

The fold project

I rebuild and run my computers for folding proteins to cure Alzheimer's, CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software it runs in the background, and uses dead CPU time with no bad effects.

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to the goal.

The easy way to get there is just to click my sig.

PM me anytime for help on folding

P.S. all but one of the laptops now are in my folding farm case they are not true laptops any more ie. NO keyboards, cases, monitors they are JUST for folding. So please I have had alot of PMs wanting me to sell/give away, thank you no.

Yep.... Most of the people here come from a generation in which for example "games" are done by computer... They are not from previous generations when you were a kid and you took some aluminum foil, made a hat and suit out of it and you were a fireman, or astronaut.

The folding farm is down a storm blew out a window, the router, and lappies, spare monitor, and power supplies all gone.
Four of the mobos have scorch marks and 1 still works if I get another PSU.
HDDs survived, may find a use for them.
Have not checked the CPUs yet,
will do that when I get back from New Orleans(too short a vacation back to work).
Down to the house computer and the good lappie.

Maxfolder,

Sorry to hear that most of your systems got fried/ damaged by I assume water when the window got blown out by the storm?

Yes, a lot of water, tree limb ended up more in then out, but I have not thrown everything out, a frend has taken a look and he thinks maybe it's not as bad and some can be (re) salvaged. Can only hope. In the long run I'm still ahead though.
