Is this an RMA..anyone? - 8890 -

I have a problem with my display on my 6 month old 8890..I've got the 1280x 1024 version.

every now and then after using an application for a time of anywhere between 15 min to 2 hours, the display will go to a lighter shade. I can turn the contrast down but then it just looks washed out. If I do a hard reboot then it will go back to normal. it mostly does it with games.

I know, I know.. yes I did a fresh BIOS update with the latest one sager gave me a month ago
(no more anoying bios beep )

Is anyone out there an ATI King?? does anyone know of some settings which may affect it or fix it...
ALSO!
my display wallpaper will disapear after coming out of screen saver. (I checked all power settings and what not). but it too doesn't do it all the time either. it just gives me a grey wallpaper, then when i click on something the area behind it will be normal wallpaper.
AND ALSO!
My dispay shows squares on the wallpaper near the middle of the screen, it seems as if it's not running at 32 bit or somthing, I might take screen shots of all this for you guys, if no one can help me. but that too... games show no squares just wall paper??

Please help.

Ok...this I guess could be hardware or software related...hard to say at first glance. First thing I would backup the HD somehow of all important data. Then I'd reformat and reload WinXP, and the latest Sager drivers and see what happens. If the problem is gone than it was definately something with the old load, and reloading was most likely the easiest solution anyways.

If the problem persists on standard load of WinXP and video drivers...than I'd be inclined to say its definately hardware related. Might be a faulty LCD cable, could be heat,,,who knows. RMA is in order. I have seen hundreds of video problems caused by software issues, and its amazing sometimes how much it might look like software :P

Every computer tech's goal is to narrow the possible cause of the problem down. This would at the very least give the RMA boys something more to go on. Good luck and lets see how it goes!

Check your settings..

Before panicing about hardware, you are going to want to check the software settings that relate to brightness and color. Open the display properties (right click on the desktop>Properties), Select the Settings tab, click the Advanced button, choose the Color tab. There are all of the Gamma and color settings. Click the default button to get defaults, etc.. Also, from the keyboard, using the Function key (Fn) plus the F9, F10 will lower and raise the hardware brightness.

Good luck!

Oh, about the blockiness on the desktop. Some number of 8890 LCDs have an 18bit display rather than a 24 bit one. Noone knows why this is, but you will just have to live with it. Sager itself doesn't seem to know. Changing the wallpaper can help, as does choosing a new theme. I like StyleXP for doing that.. very nice piece of software.

My guess is this is heat related. First of all, how are you using your machine? Is it set on a nice smooth, hard clean surface with no dust bunnies within a meter or so? If that's not the issue, look up the sticky on Arctic Silver for SAGERs and do a thorough inspection and cleaning. Definitely consider doing the full Arctic Silver treatment as it will improve the cooling systems efficiency.

If that doesn't have a satisfactory result, then repost with that information. But hopefully that will solve the problem. Oh yeah, if heat does turn out to be the problem, try tweaking your anal retentive-obsessive/compulsive settings to high intollerance of dust and lint.

Won't this hurt his Sager warranty at all? - In europe where I stay you will loose your Clevo dealer warranty (in case you are still under warranty...and were I stay we have 2 years warranty) when you apply the Arctic Silver treatment on your own and without explicite permission of your dealer (the source where you got the Clevo D800P from...) to do so. BTW, here in europe we have Clevo resellers which also are marking internal parts of the Clevo Notebooks additionally by themself via labels and coloring marks, so they can detect and determine if somebody tried to assemble or fix things on it's own.

Tried all settings...almost

I have tried all the advanced options setting, thats a given. but I shouldn't have to muck around with the ATI settings which are not my expertise, but those mainly affect color. it works normal, then all of a sudden it will go to a light shade.
I can't think of anything else except RMA, which sucks becuase i just got the thing working perfect!

If I RMA will I get a true 24 bit display? will it still be 1280x1024?
I like that native resolution.

tnaks guys..

Hi Kibbles,
I have an 8890, have had it since late september 03 and just today, my laptop did the same thing.
For no reason, the whole screen went a lighter shade.... pale if you will.
Have you found any solutions?
Bob
