When do YOU think Vista will become mainstream?

I keep on hearing about Windows Vista this... Windows Vista that. What makes it so great and when do you guys think it will become mainstream?

Also, will it ONLY run on dedicated graphics? For example. if you have the Integrated 950, are you doomed to run XP forever? Basically I'm about to buy a new notebook and it's between the NVidia 7200 or the integrated 950. I don't want to be that poor guy on here still running WinXP next year.

The integrated intel 950 will be able to run vista but without all its bells and whistles i.e. aeroglass. You're better going for the nVidia 7200.

Like with all M$ OS its just a matter of time before it becomes mainstream.

of course is going to become mainstream but it takes some time maybe q1 2008 it will takeover. normally takes a os to take atleast a year to takeover. and 7200 might be 2 weak for aero

I had a guy who runs a blog and owns an HP dv2000t with the nvidia Go 7200 run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor, and it said he can run all the aspects of Windows Vista Home Premium without any kinds of upgrades, so definitely go with the nvidia card.

As for when will it become mainstream, I am not sure, but I plan to buy the Home Premium or Ultimate version as soon as it is available.

2008, when people from this year and the prior upgrade all their computers.

Ill be one of the last people to run it. Its a hog and why its take 500 megs of ram on load is completely BS.

So XP till they unbloat the software or till they quit supporting it. I may even go linux, im not a fan of Vista right now as it is :/

See... what I fear is what I'm sure many other people feel on this board: that by the time that Vista becomes mainstream (in 08 maybe), maybe the 7200 or other current GPUs we use right now will be no good. I mean... they can SAY it will be good enough but it's hard to tell until it becomes a reality. I know myself when I develop, sometimes the standards change as the project progresses. Who knows... maybe you will be able to run the bells and whistles but with crappy performance.

Well look at it this way, they just recently phased out windows 98 and windows ME. I think you can keep XP until they phase it out, and by the time they do that, you will need a new notebook anyways.

If your going to run Vista get 2 gigs of ram. Because if they say 512 is the min, and 1 gig is recommended. Well even at 1 gig its not enough by the time you load up any half descent game or application that was made 2+ years ago. So the only option is 2 gigs really :/

Vista is a bloated POS system, don’t worry about it. Heck in a year half these people will have it, but I bet spec for spec you will out run them on XP

exactly my outlook on it. i am ok with xp, but since vista is around the corner i started the linux conversion now, so that by the time vista is out i am 100% set on being able to use linux for everything.

probably not for at least a year or more after release give them time to work out the kinks and bugs and release service pack 1

Best system of all time that is still supported in Windows 2k Pro

I can get it fully running everything I want on 78 megs XP is at 120 right now.

i run xp pro with sp2 with 60megs of memoryload

500mb for Vista is way too much I heared people say that Vista will be the best OS for audio and video artists but I seriously doubt that with 500mb in the memory all the time.. Or maybe Im wrong?
Personally, the only computers in my house that can run Vista, is my friends' and my own desktop. But even then, I won't upgrade because I don't see why. Its not revolutionary, and I see it as ME. But if I'll have to run vista, it'll be on a new laptop.

It'll become mainstream right when Halo is released for the Vista OS and no other Windows OS will work

btw is halo2 and if your a fan you wouldve played it on xbox long time ago.

Of course it will eventually go mainstream. Like any other OS, the OEM's release all their new machines with the latest OS, and soon enough it just becomes the norm. When XP was released it was buggy as hell, but it was still being shipped on every OEM...

It's just a matter of time. I agree with most here though, not an upgrade i'm looking forward to right now. While i would welcome a new OS, this really isn't truely "new".

Hmmmmm. I give it a year or so before it becomes mainstream.

I will wait for SP1 on Vista before I get it.

Never. It will be like windows ME, just an in-between thing.

You're thinking of ME. 2000 was not only popular, but XP was based on it...
