How to Install Windows- XP Help ???

I am trying to install W-XP Pro on the C: drive. I spoke with ACER. They said once you format the HD to NTFS you cannot go back to FAT32. If you totally delete data on the C: drive and install W-XP Pro - while leaving the ACER crap on the D: partition - you can always re-install the factory settings [ to the C: drive] and not void the warranty. I tried to do this and my W-XP install disc wanted to format in NTFS. How do I force the format to FAT32 ???

Please help me stay with the FAT32 format...

Acer lies. You can always reformat it back to FAT32. And they're also full of crap if they try and tell you that reinstalling an OS in its optimal form (with NTFS) would void the warranty. Now, don't expect them to give you tons of support with your software if you do this but if you don't do this, I still wouldn't expect tons of software support.

so is it possible to convert the C drive to NTFS w/o format reinstall?
Yes, it is possibile. I did it in this machine when I bough it. No need to format anything. Please see this link http://www.ntfs.com/quest3.htm. Note that you can do it for both C and D.

I too converted to ntfs on both partitions. I haven't noticed any performance difference, but I did want to be able to have files larger than 4 GB (DVD ISOs, miniDV files, for example). Also, I did a re-image after I converted to ntfs, just to see what would happen. The image brought it back to FAT 32 (which I then converted to ntfs. :P )

Oh and some actual Acer Info. ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/note...ire_3680_5600/ It has a bios flash & some drivers available for download. Not a whole lot, but it's something....

Formatting

So if I re-format to NTFS and delete partition D: and install a new copy of W-XP....could I use the DVD back up image I created --to return to the factory settings??

Acer told me no..if I formatted to NTFS. Will the DVD alone re-install to the ACER factory setting when the C: and D: drives are deleted and in NTFS.

I am struggling to understand this before I delete all the ACER stuff from the HD

"Converting to ntfs" is different than "reformatting to ntfs".

That being said, if you reformat and install a new copy of WinXP, you cannot use the Acer restore discs (DVD back up image) to return to factory settings.

Perhaps you could upgrade, or install the new XP on top of the old one. This would keep all of the Acer software and factory settings. However, it sounds like it would be pretty unstable, I don't recommend it.

If you're super concerned about it, go buy a cheap copy of Norton Ghost and make a copy of your entire drive. Once you have that copy, you can always go back to a 100% identical copy of what you had before. In case you're unfamiliar with Norton Ghost, it just takes a snapshot of your ENTIRE drive (if you choose the entire drive instead of just a particular partition) and no matter what you do (short of damaging hardware), you can always get that snapshot back on there relatively easily.

Hi,

I just bought this notebook, and other than a weak screen latch, I have only one problem. The bottom does not sit flat on a table (no, there is nothing wrong with the three different tables I tried). The front right side is a couple of millimeters up, causing the screen to wobble if I am not careful while typing. Also, even if I balance it completely, the screen starts to wobble a bit if I type too fast. Did anyone else face this problem?

Thanks.

No, I haven't seen this problem myself. Is your laptop missing any of the 'feet' on the bottom? You could always go to a hardware store and buy some adhesive ones to balance it out. It's too bad that this happened on a new laptop though. Good luck!

The notebook had all the legs at the bottom, I suppose the chassis was not perfectly molded. The wobbling of the screen seemed to be caused by that, but I am not hundred percent sure.

I went back to the CompUSA store, and even though they tried to convince me that the wobble was natural, I stuck to my case and had them exchange that for another notebook of the same model. This one sits well on the table and the screen does not wobble.

I don't have that problem either and I suspect you have the same problem. You should have 6 feet on the bottom:
one in front on each side just behind the speakers
one in back on each side in the very corner
two along the very back, one on the battery and one not on the battery

If you don't have all of these, you can probably give Acer a call and tell them you're missing some feet on your brand new laptop and you'd like a replacement but be sure to mention that you could always just bring the acer back to the store and go for that HP that was just as good.

Both my previous and the replacement have all the feet, but since the new one does not wobble, I am content to having only had to tighten the screws on CompUSA. It does speak a lot about Acer's Quality Control though. I am a bit wary as to how long this one will last. Which HP are you talking about? When I bought the Acer there were a few on sale, but I didn't find any that had equivalent price-to-specifications ratio. Did I miss a deal? M.

I bought the Acer Aspire 5600 when it went on sale two weeks ago. I am very disappointed about the quality of the system I received. Once every 5-10 minutes the laptop freezes for about 10-15 seconds. I am not sure what I should do about the freezing as it does not appear to be a software issue (I have closed acer software, etc. still freezes). I think the RAM could be bad? Any suggestions? The CPU and RAM appear fine via task manager when the freezing occurs. However, the RAM has a dead chip on it as it only reads as 504 megs. Additionally, there is a lose screw rolling around inside the laptop. On the positive side, they mistakenly installed a t2250 1.73ghz processor in this particular laptop.

Hi Everyone,

I purchased this notebook back in August from CompUSA too... The problem that I have is with the screen display, which goes dull and will not reset properly when the machine has been on for a while. A complete sut down and restart usually solves the problem, but is extremely inconvenient at times.

As others have posted, there does not seem to be support on the USA website, and the european one listed seems to list the model nos either side of 5601, etc. Also, I am far from being a tecchie...Any suggestions appreciated.

I am having the same freezing problem, although for me the frequency of freezing varies a bit. However, the RAM is showing only 504 MB because the rest of the 8 MB is being used by the Intel Graphics processor. I am not sure where the problem is either, but I did notice that after the freeze, one of the CPUs showed a sharp spike during the time the freeze occured.

RE: converting to NTFS

Don't know if this may help anyone, but I had my system reformatted with XP Pro NTFS. Then I decided to try out XP MCE and reloaded using the DVDs I created before I blew it away to load XP PRO. After reloading the original image, I decided to conver the partitions to NTFS using the instructions found here. When I tried to conver the D:\ partition using this command: convert d:\ /fs:ntfs

I got an error: Invalid drive specification - So I decided to take a look in my computer and found that when I reload the DVD image the ACER software created only 1 partition and not 2. I rebooted and it did it's check and convert the C: partition to NTFS now. Those of you who have the time may want to reload the DVD images to confirm this.

System:
5601 T2050 @ 1.60GHz
512mb factor + 1GB Patriot SODIMM (4200?)

Yes, the DVD image only restores what was on the C drive partition - FAT32. It doesn't change the D drive partition. So if you had already converted D: to NTFS, it will still be NTFS after you do a system restore from the DVD image. I'm not sure what would happen if you tried to do a restore after changing the partition sizes though. Hmmm...
