Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi Info? - Page 3

Sorry, I should've been more clear. I had initially reformated my drive into 1 C:\ partition with NTFS, then reloaded my ACER DVD images and it kept the partition intact as 1 C:\ and just reformated it to FAT32 and loaded the files.

Original C: & D: (FAT32) ->reformat to NTFS to load XP PRO as 1 C:\ partition -> reloaded ACER DVD images, it kept the partitioin and just reformated to FAT32 = 1 C:\ (FAT32)

Is there a way to do a clean install with the i386 folder in the hard drive?

For those who are having problems with the screen going dim, here's a shot in the dark that I ran into and was able to relatively easily diagnose...

I was using "Fast User Switching" mode (or whatever it's called that allows 2 users to be logged in at once) while running the default Acer software. Well, the software that controls the screen dimness was running as both users. When I brightened the screen as one user, the other user's software would override the settings and dim it back down. So no matter what I did, it would stay dim, but logging out the one user would allow the other user to do whatever you wanted.

Hey, mine 5601 has the same problem. but it just happened several times since I brought it three weeks ago. I dont know what to do, it rarely happens, so COMPusa may not exchange this for me. But I could not figure out the problem my self. My RAM is 504m too. how about other guy's?
maybe it's the problem of the RAM
any suggestion, pls let me know, thx

I've noticed this problem recently as well. I don't believe it to be the RAM as I have 1.5GB of RAM. I don't believe it to be the crap software that is installed by Acer as this is happening on a WinXP Pro install that I did. My guess is that it is some kind of crappy driver that is causing the problem. I just have absolutely no idea what.

Honestly, it almost seems like there's some sort of virtualization software above my Windows install and it's that virtualization software that is causing the problem though I doubt that's really the case, just seems like it.

I recently also noticed the problem about the screen going dim, I think maybe it's the problem for this module. Acer seems crap to me now....
does any one know can I still return the laptop to Compusa now, I just bought it on Sep. 4th in store.

Acer Screen Dim

just bought 5601AWLMi myself last week at £599 uk(Comet - if you buy through Virgin credit card Comet vouchers you get 13% off - worth noting!)
Only thing seems a bit odd is the screen brightness appears really dull, think its the ePower stuff. Tried creating new config and setting screen brightness up but just resets back to "0". Tried toggling up via Fn Right arrow but just scrolls around and goes dim again. This is when on mains and Batt is 100%. There are diff settings for batt only but not tried these.
Plan to switch this Epower stuff off and try again. Assume if there is still an issue it must be the screen. Anyone had similar? Will also look for patches on the Acer site.

Acer freezing.

I am not sure what I should do about the freezing as it does not appear to be a software issue (I have closed acer software, etc. still freezes). I think the RAM could be bad? Any suggestions? The CPU and RAM appear fine via task manager when the freezing occurs. However, the RAM has a dead chip on it as it only reads as 504 megs. Additionally, there is a lose screw rolling around inside the laptop. On the positive side, they mistakenly installed a t2250 1.73ghz processor in this particular laptop.

Hello, I believe I have a similar problem. It looks like DMA is being disable for the hard disk drive. I seem to have found a fix on this website: http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm . It appears that DMA is being disable for the hard drive. After implementing the changes the situation became much better. However, I am concerned that this is a result of a malfunction in the drive itself which is a bigger problem. I suggest that you contact acer support.
