Good news! After a few hrs of back and forth with tech support and CS a manager was willing to waive the 15% fee as long as I exchange my unit for a even or greater machine. SO i basically just reordered another m5550 with the duo core 2 processor. HOpefully the second one has no issues... only bad thing is I have to wait till sept 14 for my laptop to ship. I guess everyone is jumping on the duo core 2 models... Oh btw do u guys think its worth it to add the extra battery for 40 bucks?

Congrats! Hope everything works out for you.

About the battery, i would say get it if you need a battery a lot. Me peronsally I rarely use my battery so it's not important to me. I get 1:45 battery life average... not great but like i said its fine for me.

THanks! btw another guy on the forums here ordered a m5750 and his new laptop is randomly turning off for no reason also. (whats up with this batch of AW laptops?) Hopefully he can get a replacment just like I did even though I had to fight long and hard for AW to offer this option for me.

I wish I would have seen this earlier...

I've seen a few m5550's and m5750's with this issue, and it all seems to be corrupt operating systems... Most of them I've seen have been solved by a fresh install of windows either from the recovery disc, or the respawn disc if you bought one.

It may be that some of these units are leaving AW with a corrupt final install. I'm not sure of their procedure anymore, but they used to wipe the drive after testing and install a fresh OS, and unfortunately it seems somewhere in this process a few machines have had their OS corrupted.

The other common cause of this kind of shut down is bad memory. It may be as simple as changing the memory out to getting the system to full working condition.

Anyway, it's likely the replacement will be perfect...

Hello all, first time poster here, I will be ordering an M5550 soon, though I have a question for you folks who already have one.
I see lots of debating over the battery life on the M5550 topping out at around 1.5 hours, however, the M5550 comes equipped with battery control technology where you can lower the power settings on some of the core pieces of hardware in the laptop to prolong battery life, have any of you tried this yet?
Posting your findings would be much appreciated.

Where is this "battery control technology" program and/or options?

I have not seen it...

I don't know where to find the options, but when you look on the Alienware website and choose notebooks, intel, M5550 and then customize, in the top left corner there is a list of advantages and one of them is "Battery Control Technology".

I read that it lets you lower the power on things like the CPU and GPU to let you, for instance, watch an entire dvd movie whilst using the battery.
You'd be best contacting Alienware and asking them where to find the options.

I also own an m5550. If you go to the bios there's an option you can check. I believe that if you turn on this option, you would be able to use the "fan" button on the notebook. This enables the "battery control technology"
