post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
I have had to reinstallwindows xp on my dell inspiron 6000 but I have a strange problem when using the keyboard

When I press certain keys a number will also appear - example if i press the f key i get f4, other keys are also doing this
a=a1
s=s2
d=d3
f=f4
j=j7
k=k8
l=l9
;=;0

i've tried searching the forums & newsgroups but can't find any answers - any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks
MG

I am not under warranty - i don't think it is sticky keys because it was working fine before the reinstall.

I have checked the keyboard driver & it shows as windows 101/102 standard which cannot be right i thnk but I cannot find another keyboard driver anywhere.

there might be a keyboard driver on the resource cd or for download off the support site.

Sorry I do not have a resource cd - I cannot find it.
On the dell website I cannot find a keyboard driver.

Anybody who has an inpsiron 6000 - can they check the keyboard driver & let me know what it is please, I may then be able to google for a download.

Sorry. the driver for the keyboard is pretty much the standard xp keyboard driver. My Bad. you could also try reseating the keyboard connector from the keyboard to the motherboard.

Can you test to see if the problem occurs in SAFEMODE or commandPrompt? is yes to both then its most likely hardware related as PEBKAC suggests reseat the keyboard or consider investing in a new one. The range from 10-25 dollars from various corners of the net including the resellers in the For Sale section.

not a bad part to replace on a yearly basis anyways.

Have reseated the keyboard - no luck.
A friend has the same laptop & I used his keyboard still the same problem.

If I use an external usb keyboard works fine.
I'm don't think the problem is keyboard maybe more hardware/motherboard stuff ?
