Thinkpad T42P crashes always in games :( 128MB FireGL

I got a new Thinkpad T42P with FireGL 128MB card.

I've heard this card is not meant for gaming, but that suppose that running a graphic intensive game, like [b]NFS Most Wanted] would lead to crash the system?

I've installed several drivers for this card, including the official drivers from Lenovo site, latest Omega Drivers doing a clean install using DriveCleaner, Installed ATi official Catalyst drivers with this mod http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/, but

NFS Most Wanted crashes
NFS Porsche Unleashed crashes

I've not tested more games, but seems to me either there's no good software support to be able to run those games,

or

the video card is defective

Should I just forget this and sell the laptop (i really like it, but the fact that I can't play any games is soo frustrating)

Are there any more options??

My bro's got a laptop with FireGL T2 as well (HP Compaq nw8000) and it runs all games fine. So it's probably not your graphics card. One thing that you can always do is to admit that you are dumb-struck by the problem and ask if the maintenance / your vendor could look at it, especially if you have warranty going on. I've learnt that it's often better to let other people to do the fixing and admit that you don't know how to do it. Experts are often willing to help, if you're humble enough.

Well, I'm not a dumb-struck. I've actually done laptop maintenance, but this issue with the freezing have something to do with the hardware, since I've installed a lot of drivers, but none of those seemed to correct the problem.

Maybe this model of FireGL does not support gaming, only OpenGL so I'llbe selling it.

Maybe you should lower the settings in the games you play.

It doesn't matter, in the lowest resolution still the game froze.

My T30 never froze when playing even after 2hour in the game

Maybe you should check if the GPU is overheating. This could be due to a faulty cooling system. In the T42p, the fan is used to cool both the CPU and GPU through two heat pipes. If you have any problem with the cooling of the GPU, it will exceed the BIOS temperature thredsholds and the notebook will automaticaly shut down, not gracefuly, which will look like a system crash.

^ I have a gut feeling it's an overheating issue with the GPU like what Sebollo said.

download i8kfangui and see how hot your laptop is getting.

Spiike: I just googeled that program and it says it was write for Dell laptops. Does it work on IBM/Lenovo as well? I have a T23 and I just don't want to install to much crap on it.

Yes, indeed guys, the GPU overheats too much. This problem has been solved in late August.
What happened is that there was a manufacture lot of T42p's that had the SHORT fan installed, which only dissipates the heat on the CPU. The GPU is not covered.

So I called the woman who sold me the laptop and told her my problem.
She contacted the IBM people she knows and told her that there's a LONG fan, and that fan should be installed in my system.

So after 3 days, his brother went into my house and installed a new M24 FAN LONG Heatsink. The problem is gone.

Now I'm replacing AS5 in the CPU/GPU for a new thermal compound called Zalman Super Thermal Grease.

Thanks for your answers.

For you people who want to monitor your CPU temps, there's a program for Thinkpads that control your fan speed and let's you view your laptop Temps.
Is called Thinkpad Fan Control. Download ir here:
https://sourceforge.net/project/show...roup_id=153962

I've tested it on 3 Thinkpads: A22e, T30 & T42p
In the A22e the temps are wrong, I guess it's not compatible.
In the T30 the CPU temp is displayed correctly, but do not report GPU temp (Radeon 7500 IGP)
In my T42p both CPU/GPU temps are shown, CPU is 50C and GPU 54C. A little hot, I guess my AS5 tube was defective. I'm applying Zalman next week.
