Diagnose this LCD problem?

Thread Starter
Recently went to have a look at a friends Inspiron 8500 after they said the screen would intermittently black out or weird matrix type patterns would appear all over the screen. After using it for about 30 minutes I hadn't noticed the issue, format and reinstall of windows (on request) and all seemed fine.
The notebook was plugged into the mains at that stage, but I unplugged it, closed the lid and took it to another room and on opening it the screen was completely garbled with various primary colour lines flashing across the screen.

Couple of reboots later with the same issues the display stopped functioning at all (couldn't tell whether Windows had booted), the photos below show what I saw... I haven't opened it up to reseat any cables as of yet. The final image shows an error message that appeared on one succesful (to some extent) boot into windows saying there had been a device failure, which device though I'm unsure of.
Can anyone offer any advice as to what the problem could be?

install the sound hardware and turn the volume up. that will tell you if windows is booting (startup sound).

looks like a bad video card though. according to your error in the last pic. I had weird things like that happen when I was installing linux on my 9100. It was driver related. But if you are using oem drivers... it is the card.
