Dell 9100 now available

You can buy the 9100 on Dell's site, now. It's virtually the same machine as the XPS, except you can choose 2.8, 3.0, or 3.2 GHz processors for the 9100. The prices seem a lot more reasonable than the XPS...base price is $1000 less than XPS.

The major difference I see is that the XPS sports a 800 mhz fsb while the i9100 has only a 400 mhz fsb. Isn't that a step backwards?

There seems to be a discrepancy with the specs. On the Notebook Comparisons page, the 9100 is listed with 800MHz FSB, but when you go directly to the 9100's page, the FSB is listed as 400MHz.

Looking forward to the Ultimate Fighting Championship between your Area-51m and XPS. My $$ is on the XPS!

i don't think you can have a hyperthreading chip without an 800 FSB. i may be wrong, but i'm fairly certain that this is the speed.

perhaps they mixed up the processor with the memory rating...i know the memory operates at 400...

this thing looks awesome...

canadian site says 2.8-3.2 hyperthreading P4....and if you go to configure it, it says duel channel, 400mhz ram...unfortinatly it says to call in to order...no price is given, and you cant configure it on the site. i also seen optional 128 graphics there, so guessing the base is 64, and its prob another 2-3 hundred CDN for the 128 meg version...if this thing could be nicely configured for say 2400 cdn, it would be very tempting...

looks like a pretty solid system, especially for the price. it's HEAVY!! 8.93 lbs?! wow....

subwoofer in the battery is nice. i like the fact that it's widescreen, that you can order uxga or sxga, and that you can get a 128 meg card. that's sweet.

i wonder how battery life is in it. it's a 12 cell...but it's an HT chip. my guess is that's it's probably 1.5 to 2 hrs. max. i'd be happy if it lasted 2.5 hours...at least the length of a longer movie.

might have to consider this one too...

It's 800MHz. Look to the Dell forums.

On the downside, I hear that Intel is dropping the socket 478 3.6GHz+ Prescotts.

It looks like there won't be much in the way of CPU upgrades for this monster.

It is still a nice machine, if the right deal (circa $1700 w/ USXGA+)comes along in the next few weeks, I'll return my just ordered 8600 for it. CPU isn't that much of a bottleneck for games these days, mainly the GPU--and the 9100 should be able to upgrade to the M12.

And it doesn't have those silly XPS quicksnap covers.

I'm confused here. What's the difference between the XPS and the 9100? An astute ploy at market discrimination?

Still no indication that the XPS is going anywhere beyond one video card upgrade. I'm not prepared to make a $2500 wager, are you?

How easy is it to change the graphic chip n the inspiron 9100?

Different CPU options on the XPS, extra quik-snap covers, special XPS backpack and in-home service. The only reason to buy the XPS is if you want/need the 3.4 or 3.4 EE. Also 9100 has more screen options (WXGA/WSXGA+).

What I don't understand is why the 9100 manual does not mention anything about video card upgradeability. Dell-Machina, can you confirm that the card is upgradeable?

Thanks

I think the 9100's video card can be upgraded, but we'd have to do it ourselves rather than have a Dell technician come out and do it...much like the way we'd upgrade the 8600's video card.

It looks like you can get a better i9100 in Belgium, because there you can get a pentium-4 3.40Ghz and in most countries it's limited to 3.20Ghz.

I'm not so sure anymore. With the CPU-line nearing (or at!) a dead end, will the 9100, XPS form factor last long enough to accomodate the M12?

Or will it be another 8500?

If the XPS/9100 design is just a temporary form factor, Dell sure wasted a ton of money, along with risking the wrath of untold legions of potential customers, for a stop-gap solution.

How is this not a re-badged XPS with a few different options? Heavily configured this comes in around $2500. Not bad, but still a battery eating monster. Can't someone put a M11 9700 into a centrino rig? Heck, even with the amd64 would be nice. I mean, it would be fairly nice to be able to watch at least one full dvd on battery power!

I'm sold on it.
