And it doesn't have those silly XPS quicksnap covers.
That obersvation on CPU's is something that goes over the head of so many buyers recently.

Hmm--could cancel XPS--order 9100 and save mucho dinero--and get it at same time or sooner.

Quicksnaps

I wonder if the quicksnaps from the 9100 would fit the XPS?

same system--don't see why not.

jswriter,

When they went from the 8500 - 8600, they changed from the P4-m to the P-M. The video cards between the two are not compatible, to my knowledge.

Interesting...I knew the CPUs were different, but wasn't aware that the video cards of the 8500 and 8600 weren't compatible. Definitely something to think about for those interested in the 9100.

Your incorrect the video formfactor is nearly the same but installign wise it will fit in perfectly but due to poorer cooling on the 8500 it will be tough getting a M10 or NV31 to run at stock speeds
post #28 of 60
Really? I had read on the Dell forums that people couldn't get the M10 into their 8500's. I'll have to check again...
You're right. The M10 fits in the 8500.

It takes some doing... you need a new BIOS to let the machine run at a higher temp, and you apparantly need to modify the cooling scheme on the GPU, but it does fit.

Now I wonder who is faster... an 8500 with a 2.6GHz P4-m or an 8600 with the 1.7GHz P-M.

The 8500 solution is certainly cheaper...

I doubt that you'll be able to upgrade to the m12:

- Dell has only said anything about gfx card upgradability for the XPS(even though hardware should be the same for the 9100)

- The XPS gfx card upgrade is gonna be a one-time only deal and to a card that will be released in may/june.

- All points to that this new card will be the geforcefx5700 go

- The m12 should only be available several months after the r420 desktop gpu has shipped: more like christmas

- An IBM gpu roadmap (can't find the link) already indicated a late 2004 m12 release, and just like its desktop counterpart, it should be pci express.

Too bad though, if the m12 has 8 pixel pipelines and a 256bit memory interface we'd be talking double the performance in games of the m11

I'm still gonna try and buy the 9100 , if only I could find a way to buy one in a country where Dell doesn't sell its Inspiron notebooks

Keep in mind dell says a lot of things id rather be optimistic about this upgradability

Timeframe is also up for argument and the whole one time thing is silly to point out right now

This is EXTREMELY unlikely since Dell already has a 5700 out for there M60 laptop if its a 5700 it will be a 5750 with 256MB which i doubt heavily

- The m12 should only be available several months after the r420 desktop gpu has shipped: more like christmas
Timeframe is always an argument open for discussion optimistically id say early fall worst case scenario M12 wont see th elight of day till 2005

This one is just stupid IBM is usually the last to jump on Video technology Bandwagon remember it hasnt been that long since theve released the M11

Too bad though, if the m12 has 8 pixel pipelines and a 256bit memory interface we'd be talking double the performance in games of the m11
Signs point towards a * pipeline but unknown memory bandwith arc so pray for something sweet here

Well you gusy can always wait till May/June to see what they offer and than buy it than to see if they still offer another vid card upgrade wit the brand new purchase of a XPS
post #33 of 60
This is my number 1 reason to think that there is only 1 possible upgrade for the vid card: Straight off of dell's site

Q How many graphics card upgrades am I eligible for?
A The Graphics Card Upgrade Program is available One Time Only and only to those customers who purchase an Inspiron XPS with the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro graphics card. Once the new graphics card becomes available, all new Inspiron XPS models will ship with the upgraded card.

^^ THE LAST SENTENCE states.... that the ATI Radeon is only a temporary solution for the XPS

This makes it sound to me like once the 9700 is replaced you are stuck with whatever the replacement is. Also, they do not say if the XPS models that ship with the upgraded card can be upgraded later on.

Hmmmmmm.........

Exactly so that makes me strongly believe that I think dell is only using the ATI as a temporary solution and maybe they just wanted to push the XPS onto the market first. That way they can make some money off us eager gaming junkies while also giving us the option of purchasing their future XPS graphics card (whatever that may be)
Why isnt the XPS and the 9100 offering the 256 meg ATi card?
Good question. Does anybody offer them for purchase yet?
Sager does, ppl said that the 256 mb may not offer the best performance or something like that, I'm sure that the XPS card that we will be allowed to upgrade to will be 256 MB.

I personally do not htink the 256 is complete yet tho.

Ive seen the Voodoo one, they just released their version of the 8790 too with the 17" screen and the 256mb ATi card. I priced one out to be over $4000! thats just insane.
