Unplug M170 from Wall and computer locks up

Thread Starter
I have a wierd problem. Got back from a LAN, it happened during it to, but when I unplug the laptop, it freezes to the point I have to restart. I did drop the laptop maybe a foot the day before, but it was working then, so I have no idea what is up. Any help?

Hmm, that seems strange. I think your network adapter driver might have corrupt. Try to reinstall the network card driver and see if that correct the issue. I have bringing my old M170 to LAN party all the time and it doesn't have the same problem like yours...

OR

You mean you unplug the power cord and lappy is running under battery?? If so, you might have the network adapter disable on battery. Just go into Quickset and uncheck the option.

If that still did not correct the problem....then call Dell

my wife has the same problem. it happens only when its already on and the network card is in, then when she unplugs the power it will freeze.
I will try what you said about the network adapter disable on battery option.

i aslo found a post on experts exchange with a similar problem.
Q:
Every time I unplug the laptop from the power, it completely freezes up and even task manager wont work. So I have to shut it off manually and start it up again.
Has anybody else experienced a problem like this? I have no idea what to check and where to look and windows doesnt seem to find any fault with itself.

A:
This problem is due to a conflict with SP2 and the AMD PowerNow software that controls speed for the AMD Athlon 64 Mobile processor.

I had the same problem because prior to SP2, I had been running the Windows 2000 version of the AMD software, which allows for more user control over processor speed while on battery than the Windows XP version which operates automatically, with no option for user control. Unfortunately, the removing the software and installing the latest version for Windows XP from the AMD website did not fix the problem.

Check your QuickSet setting. The default is disable the wire network adapter when running battery. Just set that off. Make the wire network adapter running using battery power as well see if that correct the problem.
