hey fellow mac users, you guys might know how to do this, I was wondering if there is anyway that I can lock a file (i.e password protect it) so that no one can view it. It's a pages document.

Any help on this issue is greatly apreciated. thanks

the only FREE thing ive seen is the "file vault" built into OSX

it encrypts the home folder when your logged out. maybe give it a google. i too am looking for something thatll lock a folder for me. i used to use winzip on my xp machine to archive the folder and encrypt it, but now im in need of something new.

The only way to do what you want is to create a new disk image in Disk Utility and add a password to the image. Then place the files you want to protect inside of it.

If you create a "sparse" disk image it will only take up the amount of space as the files inside of it up to a set size.

i like the file vault option still. u just have to be logged out for it to work.

Filevault is crap.

It creates a sparse disk image and moves your entire homefolder into it. If the image becomes corrupted everything is GONE. There's absolutely no need to protect the entire home folder anyway; it's an incredibly huge overkill, even for people who need security.

Anything that has to be secure is much better placed into it's own disk image, that way you don't have to worry about losing all your data if something happens. Plus you don't have the overhead associated with constantly encrypting and decrypting files.
