A New Alien :D (m5550) - Page 2

I'll be getting some Mushkin soon... though I doubt you will see a huge difference if at all.

The reason I like Mushkin is the matched sets are very fast, very low latency, and have been known to overclock like crazy (even with lower voltages).

Keep in mind, thats what I am used to... on the desktop side of things. I have not owned any of their notebook memory... I'm just brand loyalty

I spoke w/Mushkin today, to check about their laptop memory. Their laptop memory isn't matched, they're pulled from the same racks and packaged.

I'd like to see how the Mushkins do. Buying my Patriots locally, makes it easier for me to return them, if I don't like them.

I haven't found anything faster w/PC2-5300.

Do a review on the 2.0 processor when you get it. I was lucky enough to order the base, but got the 1.83 for nothing...that still bugs me as to why...maybe because I called AW 3x a day trying to find out when my 1.66 would be instock again. lol

Again as soon as I get my laptop, hopefully next weekend, I'll be doing a bunch of benchmarks.

I'll be testing it w/the standard 512 mb, as well as w/the 2 gb. I've also got a new Hitachi 60 gb 7200 RPM HD that I want to install and test. I ordered my m5550 w/the standard 60 gb 5400 RPM HD.

Phase 9: (Shipping)

If shipped out today, how long does it generally take for it to get to the customer? Five days? I live up in the northwest.

I'm thinking of buying the m5550.. just curious about some things. How are the hinges with this laptop?
If you purchsed the respawn dvd, it would take like 20mins to install the laptop the way it left the factory on your hitachi drive! Otherwise you got to install all the drivers etc yourself, so will take a bit longer.

I cant speak on behalf of the M5550, but as an M5500 owner, i know the hinges are bloody solid, the laptop itself is very solid. I cant be happier with my Alienware!

Interested as to why you returned your macbook pro? My girlfriend is a graphic designer and is basically used to macs, i would like to get her a macbook pro and install XP for myself on there, ive heard of overheating problems. Anything else? LOL

I haven't received mine yet, so I couldn't tell you.

I haven't read of any issues here about problems w/the hinges.

Once you hit phase 3, they put your order in line to be built. How long it takes to get to phase 4 depends on how many people are in front of you, and if you have any parts on backorder.
AW CS said when I called them that they don't do phase 4 anymore. It just goes right into phase 5. Atleast for me it did.

Well I got my m5550 today.

I've had it on all day, running tests, and it's barely warm. I do have a laptop cooler underneat, which I'm sure helps, but still, it's no where near being hot, as some have complained about.

I've been doing video benchmarks, starting w/the provided Nvidia driver, 84.71.

I'll then update it to the latest tweaked one.

I'm also starting w/only 512 mb of system memory, which I ordered w/the system. I'll then replace the system memory w/the 2gb memory I just bought, then repeat the tests.

SWWEEETT!!! I'm excited for you!?

I believe mine will ship Monday and I'll get it sometime. I didn't opt for the fast shipping cause I'll be working through the week pretty late.

Any other things you can say about it? LCD nice?

Mine took a little over five days from shipping, to delivery, regular shipping. It arrived on Saturday morning, around 8:30. It's a beautiful laptop, w/a nice finish. The screen is great, and oh by the way, it's not 1280x768, but rather 1280x800, for a max. It's also very fast, especially the graphics. I'll be posting benchmarks, lots of them, w/not only the orginal provided Nvidia video driver (84.71), but w/a tweaked one(s). That, as well as system benchmarks, w/512 mb memory, as well as w/2 gb. My benchmarks: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread171194.html By the way, does anyone know the stock clock speeds (gpu, video memory) of the Nvidia Go 7600 video in the m5550? You can find my review over at the reviews and benchmarks section. There's no sense in providing any pictures, since it's no different than anyone elses on the outside. As I pointed out before, it's been slightly warm under my palm, under heavy load, on the right side, but very very tolerable. Again I do have a laptop cooler under it, which helps, but what has been pointed out by others, just don't block any of the ventilation vents, other wise it's bound to get hot. .
