abf's latest project: ubuntu + e17

So I got tiered of my ubuntu dapper x64 for the following reasons:
1 - when i installed gnome network manger my wifi became highly unstable (would cause extremely high ping in ET every few minutes hurting the gameplay) removing it did not solve the problem
2 - every other time i started/exited ET (or other fullscreen apps) xorg would restart.

didn't mind so much the xorg but the unstable wifi was the suck, so i dumped it.

earlier this morning i tried to setup Arch + E17 but it kept backfiring on me, so i downloaded an Ubuntu Alternate i386 cd and installed a "Server" (ie..base system only) as the base for my project.

what i did so far:
install base ubuntu server
apt-get upgrade
install xorg base system
install e17cvs + entrance-cvs
install firefox and xterm
install automatix and use it to configure some apps, fonts and media codecs

stuff i am yet to do:
Alsa: install, configure, and get it to start on boot
get networking to connet on boot
install and configure usplash
other tid-bits.

so far coming up pretty good. haha...the magic of ubuntu less the fat of gnome. well....just wanted to make the announcement. i'll also be coming back here to ask questions and stuff like that if i get stuck.....

abf: what login manager are you using (planning on using). Can I make a suggestion: don't use gdm or kdm, as e17 doesn't like them much (never been able to figure out why, but that's been my experience). Use xdm instead, seemed to work better. I did an e16 install on Breezy, but haven't played with e17 as much. My current project is fluxbuntu ... it's running in concurrence with my Kubuntu... so if I have to do some heavy processor lifting, I just login to flux instead of KDE, works great (I'm still a KDE junkie at heart).

I want screenshots!!!

OH, and be careful with automatix and alternative window managers... it fried my first flux install, had to go back to a server state and reinstall both flux and KDE.

i used entrance as the login manager and it worked flawlessly. automatix was safe to use. something killed it for me though....dont remember what it was either. haha....so currently i am just using xubuntu. found xfce gives me the best cross between gnome (i am a gnome junkie) and something lightweight.

haha... did you find e17 hard to work with at all? It's all config files right? I'm used to that with flux, but haven't done it with e17 before.

Good ole "sudo vim /home/olly/.fluxbox/<random config file>"

E17 is not standard text based config files, a lot of things are compiled via their own method to binary. So yes it is difficult to work with.

On the flip side though according to get-e.org EAP files may be going the way of the dinosaur to be replaced with the more standard .desktop file, I gotta say I appreciate this move as it is one more step to wards a unified desktop, or at least not one away from it.

Seablade, can you show us some screenshots of your E17 setup? I haven't seen anyone that actually uses it reliably.

Functionality was a pain for me, but I could have gotten through that. Stability was the killer. So many apps would crash. This is 6 months ago, mind you.

Hmm strange on the stability, I tihnk that might have to do with the CVS snapshot you probably grabbed.

Mine at the moment is halfway across the country so not right now. I will probably be rebuilding a bit after I get back(Hoping to upgrade to twin dual cores and more memory depending on money, and then adding in transparency to try out something that I heard about on the LAU list that might be useful for me as my audio software uses up a LOT of desktop space ), but after that I will be more than happy to.

At the moment though I can tell you it has the standard Carbon Theme up. I may be looking at retheming it myself once I get the website up and running to match the theme of my professional website once I finish that up... yea for animated backgrounds, of course this all depends on how things run, I have heard of some problems with realtime audio and dual core setups but I will see how things go when I get there.

By the way I am interested to try out the ELive CD just to see what they have going
