If running on A/C, does the computer need to be shut off to remove the battery?

I do.

On most electronics rule #1 is to remove power when connecting /disconnecting devices.

Removing the battery while on A/C power "could" cause a problem / damage the charging circuit, especially if the battery is charging. It could also damage other components.

I'd refer to your owners manual, seeing if the mfg states it's safe to do so.

Hehe... thanks. Ditto

Yeah, I've also got a C5447... one digit out. Seems a lot of us have this battery, even though I got my 9400 way back in January... one of the first ones.

It's good, though, that the media is picking it up... everyone needs to know. I heard it on the radio this morning as well...

Does this list include old dell battery recalls. I need to check out my system but my fiance has an older computer i think before the cut off date that might have been included in old recalls.

Also was there ever a recall for old power supplies?

I got the C5447 in my 9300. Whew, just missed it. I would've kinda liked a new battery though

After changing it - it said that I needed a replacement. I suggest you do the same - as you probably have the same battery as I do. Savvy?

I tried it last night with both 0's and O's. I thought the same as you they do look like the other so its hard to tell. It still isnt being recalled for me. My 4 other C5447's are fine

It looks like Dell is taking this very seriously. Good for them.
Recalling that many batteries is going to be expensive.
My wife just called to say her 700m has battery has been recalled.
On the plus side, we get fresh new batteries on 18 month old laptops.

I like Dells, but I also like this pic.

Anyone know if it's possible to get a 9 cell replacement if I have a 6 cell battery now? I'm willing to pay the difference, anyone ask that yet?
WScottCross,

the price difference on dell's website is similar to what a new 9 cell would cost you on eBay. So I would just buy one there and have 2 batteries (which hopefully neither will explode)

I got a problem now.....
my mom saw that comercial....
soo she got me to put the code, im up for replacement but
my mom wants the whole system to be replaced, but the link down say:

Please note that only the described battery packs are subject to this recall and not the notebook computers themselves.

Ok, but then why did they Sold Computer Bombs without checking ?

ill just have to whine to make my mom be Cooled down i guess... --o

Krazy...The batteries are a seperate component of the notebook. THe problem is within the battery component itself & has no effect on the system at all...Well unless the system actually blows up that is

...As far as "not checking" ...While I am sure Dell & Sony performed hundreds of tests there is no way to make sure everything is perfectly safe. The open marketplace is the real testbed, as the components are tested by the millions in every concievable enviroment & situation. It is unfortunate that this recall occured for Dell & Sony. The thing you have to take into consideration is the fact that there are millions of batteries out there & only a few hundred have had issues.

In the interest of safety they are recalling the entire productin lines to ensure that there are no more issues.

None of mine are on the recall list.

I had the same thing. Make sure you type in the number 0 instead of the text O. Once I did that, I found I needed a replacement.

I had to enter the O to 0 and it worked, said I needed a replacement. So they better hurry up, I want a new battery.
