Dell to Recall 4.1 Million Notebook Batteries

According to this article Dell will recall 4.1 million lappie batteries. The key distinction is that the LiIon batteries were made by Sony.

Does anyone know how to tell if you have Sony cells?

More technical info in this CNET article, still no serial numbers.

How useful, the article says they are going to recall batteries, then goes on without saying what the serial numbers of the batteries are.

In most cases you log in to the mfg's site to get the serial number ranges of affected units.

I would assume in a day or so you should be able to log in, visit the DELL site for details.

This article says it affects laptops made until July 18th of this year. I bought a refurb originally built and shipped July 12th. Guess I might be getting a new battery pack.

Great news! I could use a new battery about now. Gotta love Dell (Sony?) and their explosive batteries.

I KNOW!!! My Inspiron 6000 lasts no more than 20 minutes on battery now...and only a year old. Hopefully my battery is made by Sony (I can't tell...any way I can find out before 1 am?)

Nope. It's just like Christmas. You gotta stay awake to see Santa Claus.

Just checked...the site is up! And guess who's getting a new free battery (Wish I had bought my new E1505 just two weeks earlier...could've gotten two )

No replacement for me Dell XPS1710 ordered a few days after launch

No replacement for me. The model of my battery is on the list, but the PPID returns with "no need for replacement".

I feel just a tad guilty that I'm getting this free battery. I'm probably one of the 4.099 million people who haven't had any problems and probably never would have. Sucks that Dell gets screwed over a few dozen freak batteries.

Who am I kidding. I love milking big corporations. Fcuk commerce

I'm going to take a stab and say they're going in chronological order with the request numbers. I checked every few minutes around two hours ago and I probably had my request submitted within five minutes and my confirmation number was 1XX.

Aside from that useless bit of info...how many people who are eligible do you think will cash in on this offer? I'd imagine the first few hours are when the biggest influx of people would submit their requests...but if only two thousand and change have registered so far...I'm going to say that less than 100,000 people of the 4 million are going to end up with a free battery.

What a shame.

As of two hours ago they were saying that the website wouldn't even be live until 1 am CST, so if 2000 people have already signed up before 1 am CST, that suggests that quite a lot of people will be signing up. Maybe it will wind up being 100,000. Who knows. I'd think most people who hear "Dell battery recall" who have a Dell are probably going to look into getting a replacement. It's not like there hasn't been stuff going around on the internet about exploding Dells or anything.
