sony sz vs. xps m1210

Thread Starter
stumbled across this forum when looking for info on notebooks - first time poster and i can't decide which of these notebooks to get:

sony sz 13.3" 1280x800wide - customized
specs:
cpu: t2300 @ 1.66ghz
ram: 1gig
gfx: integrated+nvidia 7400 (both)
hd: 5400rpm 60gb
optical: cd-rw/dvd reader
no camera/webcam, standard battery, black keyboard
total: $1450

dell xps m1210 12.1" 1280x800wide
specs:
cpu: t2300
ram: 1gb
gfx: nvidia 7400
hd: 7200rpm 60gb
optical: cd-rw/dvd
standard 6-cell battery.
total: $1,384
----

as you can see the prices are pretty close together, as well as the features. Dell's is slightly cheaper with a better hard drive, but the sony has the option of toggling between integrated gfx and the 7400. I also prefer the look/style of the sony notebook, and i belive it is slimmer (important factor).

i'll be using this notebook for college so it'll be going back and forth between my apartment and campus. i'll probably play a few games on it, though nothing too intensive (no oblivion, more like hl2/need for speed). it'll mainly be used for multitasking between ms office, dvd player, internet, etc.

what i really want to know is:
a) how much slower is a 5400rpm hard drive in real life?
b) i've read reviews that the xps m1210 is "significantly thicker" than others in its class. what does that mean? the class is ultraportable, so i'd imagine even if it's thick, it can't be THAT thick, right? does anyone have a side by side pic of the vaio and the xps - i've looked but can't find one.
c) battery life. i've read really good things about the xps' battery life, and mixed reviews on the vaio. can anyone comment personally on either?

i've played around with the vaio and like it very much, but haven't played with the XPS. if the xps isn't that much thicker/bigger than the vaio, then i'll definitely go with the XPS. thanks for your input

i'm in the same boat any info is appreciated. I'm also looking at the Asus W7J, the choices seem endless!

Price aside, if it was me, I would get the SZ. If you expand your choices to include the W7J, then I would get this instead.

a) you will notice during the boot and also when loading large files (duh!). gaming, for example. try to find numbers of hard disk speeds (mb/s etc).

b) you don't need to find pictures of the M1210 and the SZ side by side to see that the dell is considerably thicker (compare the USB and other ports to have the picture). Even my current notebook is much thinner than the Dell, by seeing the pictures. But I guess that's the price you pay for having a 7400 on a 12" wide. And, to be honest, my experience is that size accounts for most of the "portability" of a notebook, not the weight. Of course, that's what I feel.

c) Sorry. Can't point you, but I guess, again, that you can find that info on the net easily. A notebook review is only a review if the battery life is measured.

Good luck.

I'd get the Sony. First of all I think that 12" is too tiny, 13.3" feels much more confortable IMO. It's slimmer, dual GPU... and you can actually get a much better deal on ebay or other resellers.. just search for a sony sz110, it goes for about $1400 on ebay and comes with a core duo 1.83, 100GB HD 5400 RPM, 1GB of ram

What's the difference between the 110 and the 240 (the one sold at sony.com/sonystyle.com) ?

//edit

I mean, exclusive differences, something that can't be configured to be the same.

I would go for the Sony, it has a bigger screen and is smaller/lighter.

I am not sure, but the Vaio should get good battery life (expecially when it is using integrated graphics - "Stamina" mode)

Sony gets my vote.

Bigger screen, lighter, sleeker, slimmer... And you don't need a fire extinguisher next to you.

I'll wait for the SONY Merom SZ since it looks like its just around the corner:

Don't think I'll need all that high priced (2 GB) RAM though.

But to tell you the truth, if the Macbook gets Merom and a dedicated GPU then that will be my choice hands down, though it's probably not likely. They say Sept 12th is time for the upgrade for Macbooks/Mac book Pros. Perhaps I'll wait and see.

Go for the Sony. Better support than the Dell, as well as better battery life and portability. The screens are very similar, with the Sony being larger and slightly brighter.

SZ hands down. Merom isnt anything special, it is only a 2-3% overall performance upgrade and the only place it goes better at is Encoding which is 20% faster....which unless you do alot of it isnt a big deal..omg you save 20-30 sec. Besides the new intel 800mhz chipset is out in Q1 of 2007...bottom line is you'll always be waiting for something "new" so buy what you want. For 1800 you could buy this SZ http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1142299298850
it has 120g HD, broadband modem, and faster CPU......also all the ram that sony gives on the SZ is 533mhz...so you can buy 2 gigs of 667mhz ram for like $160 bucks and make it scream. The link to the SZ with a merom is WAY over priced.

Besides Sony is awsome Dell is just....meh. Also ALOT of people have problems with Dell and getting HORRIBLE crappy screens. The SZ also gets ALOT better battery life. BTW I have a m1710.....it has a horrible screen...but since its hooked up to my 20" external LCD 99.9% of the time I dont care.

Go with the SZ its awsome.
