New Wifi Card

Thread Starter
I'm looking to completly change up my wireless in my E1705 that uses Mini PCI-E.

What I'm looking for

* A wifi card that supports an antenna (If you could link me an antenna to use with your suggestion that would be great
* A wifi card that has passive sniffing abilities (I do wireless security checks for homes from time to time and it would help if I could run those aps, my Intel currently isn't supported

============================
So lemme know what your using or what you would use if you were me.

Also, if you know of a simple program that can capture "pcap" files from a wireless network lemme know.

Just out of curiousity, what software do you use for passive sniffing?

TIA

Sorry to have bothered you. I was giving ya free bumps, though.....

AFAIK, Atheros chipsets are supported by ethereal (please do correct me if I am wrong)

Nah your right, I'm consideriinng a Atheros card, $70 bucks though... Anyone know of an antenna for that thing?

If you're going Atheros, you'd be better off saving the slot and getting Gigabyte's mini-PCIe card. WIAG-02GN or something.

Wait, aren't those both mini-PCIe? and the Gigabyte uses the Atheros chips anyways.

Do you know if

that card can take antennas
The AR5006EX is not mini-pci, its PCI-E for a desktop... you would need the AR5006XS http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll..._promot_widget

This one has two antenna connectors, look at the top right of the picture in the listing, its the two gold connectors...

Looking at the Atheros website, this new technology from them looks to be interesting. Their latest chip is a 802.11A/B/G/Draft-N combo. Atheros has always had a stable platform to build a network on. I just wish they would hurry up and slap one of these babies on a mini-PCIe board and ship it!

Yeah, those cards look nifty... I thougt the XS had some kind of draft-n on it...
You think it would be wiser to wait?

Oh and is this the kind of antenna adapter I would use on the Atheros card?

Oh and by the way, the card I pointed you to is the PCI-e Card...

The one you pointed me to is a PCI-MINI, not Express... the E1705 only takes Express.

The mini pci card will not works with M1710. The internal LCD frame antenna wasn't doing its job on mine M1710 so I go for a external usa device with 7dbi antenna. Works great for me that I can do online without worry about reception.

It uses Atheros AR5005UX chipset.

The website is www.netgate.com and can also get the antenna like this one:

or buy the antenna cable to link to internal card with a RP-SMA Connector:

Give it a try

Do you have any idea what you are saying??? M1705 and M1710 use express card. The one that you shows is for your old 9300 or M170. The mini pci and mini-pci-e aren't the same format.

I purchased the AR5006EX for my E1705 as I also need better reception than the 1390 dell gives me.
I am still awaiting the return of my dell from repair/warranty service but will post a quick review once I get it installed.

Apparantly not? lol

Its been a while since I have spent any time posting in here (or reading for that matter) so I just figured they were still using mini-pci for all notebooks. Then for some reason, I also thought that the mini-pci slot in the 9300 was an express slot. So I was way off! I promise that I will read a little bit closer next time, and then maybe I can provide an intelligent answer! lol

Ya that's what I bought too... I'm going to review the crap out of it once i get it and also start writing guides on how to increase reception...
