Upgrading memory

I own an HP zv6015us and I am looking to upgrade one of the RAM slots from 512 to 1 gig, but I don't know how to tell if the replacement RAM is compatible. Can anyone help me please?

Use a little analysis program like CPU-Z. Theres an option in there that tells you about your RAM.

Well, looking at the HP support site, it seems that the laptop take DDR-333 PC-2700 RAM. It also mentioned that you can go to Start -> Help and Support and find the information there (although it didn't give specific directions).

If you want to double-check that, go to http://www.crucial.com/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=RAM and click on "Scan My System". It should tell you what you need to know.

If you want something you can install, use either Everest Home Edition or Belarc Advisor. Either should be able to identify the RAM.

Does it have to be the same speed as the old RAM, or would I be able to upgrade that too? Like would I be able to buy 1 gig of DDR2-SODIMM at 533 MHz, or would that not be compatible?

No, you can only use DDR RAM, not DDR2.

ddr 400 would work but not ddr2. ddr and ddr2 uses completely difference slots and chipset

I apologize for being so clueless. I am only now beginning to learn the full ins and outs of computers, so please be patient with me.

As long as I get DDR memory, I am ok. Am I understanding that correctly? will it matter if it is DDR SDRAM or DDR SODIMM? And will the speed matter? Do I have to get 333MHz like the memory I currently have, or can I get something faster?

Thanks for being patient and helping me out guys. I appreciate it.

You have to get the DDR SODIMM. The regular DDR SDRAM will only fit in desktops.

If you get something faster and your motherboard is not compatible with it, it will automatically downclock (from 400mhz to 333mhz, for example). So, there is no harm in getting something faster, just be aware that there may be no benefit to doing that.

What Zakaluka said is correct, it doesnt matter if you're getting 400mhz or 333mhz ram, but try to get one with the lowest latency possible
