P15 S470 and 479 - opinions please!

Thread Starter
My branch of Fry's (the huge electronics chain store in the west) in Renton,
WA has Toshibas Satellite P15 models on sale: S470 ($1900) and S479 ($1800). I am thinking of buying one, esp. the 470. Both are set up for media (has DVD burner, XP Media edition, inputs for copying VHS tapes, etc).

I would greatly appreciate opinions of these two laptops, especially the
S470. I will be using it as desktop replacement, also for tuning and
recording TV programs, also for copying my huge library of VHS and Beta tapes to DVD.

The salesman at Fry's tells me these models are being discontinued, hence
the Fry sale price. However, the S470 is still on Toshiba's web site.

Thanks in advance! Any opinion, advise, etc appreciated.

I just purchased P15S479 bk of significant rebates/discounts at Circuit City (net price of $1700) and have been very pleased with its performance. It has very good Toshiba installed SW including utilities and monitoring. The current model is the S470 in which the processor upgraded from 2.8 to 3.0. The other changes is that the OS (XP Media) is 2004 whereas mine is 2002/3 (I have read that one can contact Toshiba to upgrade OS but I have not called yet to confirm). Since I have Mac desktop and notebook, I had to buy a notebook with WinXP bk of work needs. The Toshiba was the brand that was closer to Mac (but my equivalent Mac notebook cost about $800 more). The other positives are that it comes with very good instructions (on line) and restore DVD which includes all loaded SW (many competitors are going to placing restore on HD...I prefer separate DVD or CD). I have used about 70% of the features including TV, CD burner, DVD movie, CD music, etc. It was fairly easy to hookup to home network which is Mac airport extreme (has built-in print server) as well as use network printer.

Here are some negatives that I consider minor to my needs...would prefer Roxio or Nero burn SW vs Toshiba's installed (it works fine and may be OK but I have not used it extensively yet), somewhat heavy for extreme mobility (I use more as substitute desktop or to move from office to den or bedrm), and CD/DVD hardware located at front of notebook (prefer on the side). The TV tuner is external which requires separate AC adapter and connector cords (but it works). An internal TV tuner would be better but hard to find with 15" screen. The tech. service OK but will better once the service is moved back to US (per Toshiba customer service).

This website has very good info on P479:

time is running out for mce upgrade choice

I don't even really use the media center stuff but time is ticking out for upgrade from 2002 (or whatever it is) to 2004. I did the upgrade don't know exactly why? but it costs about 30 bucks us takes toshiba a while to ship you out the disk.

I have p25 607 the p15's look nice also congrats (think biggest difference is p25 have 17 wide screen not sure of others).

Toshiba Media Center Edition Update,
If you have MCE2002 you can get update from www.mceupgrade.toshiba.com for 2004,

Satellite P15-S470 and S479 looks same to me but why don't you check detailed specs from www.ts.toshiba.com
