Please, a little help!!!!

Hi,

I am not at all computer savvy, and really not afraid to admit it.

I would like a laptop, preferably one which does not break down/ catch fire spontaneously, predominantly for using the internet, creating Word documents and downloading music as well as watching dvds.

First of all, I was going to get an intel centrino by toshiba. Then my family decided 'no no, an intel centrino duo is the way forward'... so an Acer computer was suggested. Then they said that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a celeron and a centrino (true!!), so it really made no difference. And ARGGHHHHH, now I am back to square one, and if I don't pick one soon, I'll have to go back to using my crappy no-memory-left 5GB laptop (I kid you not. It's got about... 70MB left on it).

My brother (the annoying one who has contributed to this whole 'let's get this... no, let's get this one...' has finally suggested:

Can anyone tell me if it is any good, because I have tried googling it, and there don't seem to be many reviews.

Is it a problem if the processor cache is only 1MB? (whatever that means )

Does AMD Turion work just as well as centrino?

Can anyone see any bad points in the computer? Is it worth the price?

Thank you thank you thank you to whomever can help me. You'll have saved me from my uber slow-full-up laptop!

just get a nicely optioned Dell E1505.

really advised to a core duo, or turion x2, as it will make DVD watching arguably smoother across the entire 2 hours (even if antivirus or something kicks on in the background).

integrated video will be okay for all of that, go with 1 gig of memory (1024megabytes) disk size is really unimportant, but try for at least 5400 rpm.

widescreen is best for DVDs

i looked at your link, that's a pretty nice machine for the money, the only thing I wouldn't go for is the 4200 rpm drive - though it would make the battery last longer, it's painfully slow to load applications and windows.

centrino is just an options package that says you're using the intel chipset and have a certain brand of wireless. so yes, the machine you listed is just as good, arguably, because it has integrated WiFi, like everything these days

good luck

EDIT: the model you're looking at has a single core processor, which I would NOT get if I wanted the best experience. the e1505 comes with dual core for a very competitive price, and is the same size notebook. try to find that HP in Turion X2, or option up the Dell

hey there miss m well heres a quick rundown of what i think would suit your needs...

processor - if all youre going to do is surf the net, type letters and stuff, and watch sin city, then a normal centrino, or hell even a pentium 4-m will be fine... with processors right, the key is the PLATFORM, not the speed... in other words, a pentium is way different to a centrino, but a centrino 1.6GHz is not all that much slower than a 1.8GHz.... especially when you will not run the CPU at 100% a lot... for your purposes, a core solo should be fine... somewhere around the 1.8GHz range...

ram - 1 gig, not much to explain... 1 gig should do you fine for most everything... 512 is a bit measly for windows xp and is not enough for vista... and with ram, you can always upgrade

graphics/sound card - since you will not be gaming or CAD, just go for on board graphics (i.e. no discrete graphics card)... the new on board graphics are all pretty sweet eh

now, that lappie you picked out is alright... the specs are pretty much what you are looking for except, a 4200rpm hard drive is too slow... look for a 5400rpm... and, its a little big and a little heavy for you i guess... all those components will fit in something smaller than 15 inches (12 - 14') and should be lighter than 3kgs... 3kgs is quite annoying to carry around you know...

so with that, you should have a general idea of what you need eh... core solo 1.8GHz, 1 gig ram, on board graphics, 14 inches or so, should be about 2kgs... a lot of laptops fit into this category so i dont know of any specific model numbers to recommend you, but heres a rundown of brands... they are all quite good brands ya but ive listed the brands i think are highest quality first

1 - ibm lenovo - excellent quality, great battery life, but the looks arent the greatest... have a look at one in person before you buy eh, cos their fashion appeal is... an acquired taste...

2 - fujitsu - again excellent quality, great battery life, and looks slightly better!

3 - hp - good quality, but can get a bit expensive

4 - toshiba - almost everyone i have asked has recommended toshiba first and foremost... they are priced well too... if you are looking for a day-to-day use laptop (as opposed to a super performer or a super eye-catcher) i recommend you start with toshiba

5 - asus - good quality, and very good price... i like the way they look, but not everyone

good luck eh
