Power & Battery Light still on when NP9860 is shutdown

Hi guys,

Does anyone have this problem or is it my imagination that this should not be on when the laptop is shutoff? The light is always on, but for some reason I remember these lights never being on before.

Also, for some reason, sometimes my laptop turns ON by itself when I handle it without touching the power button. It's almost like some other action is causing it to switch to power on. I'm thinking maybe it has to do with my first problem with the lights; do you think the computer is not really shutting off and is rather in standby mode? I have no idea... any suggestions or comments will be much appreciated :P

Thanks,

Nakora

Funny that this is the first post in the support forums. I have the exact same problem with my laptop. It happend maybe about 2 weeks ago. The charge lights stay on even when the laptop is off. I believe it has to do with the battery discharging. It is about a year and a half old and with the power this laptop uses I figure it's the most likely cause. I have a new battery arriving tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes. What do you mean by the laptop turns on by itself? Do you hit any keys or open the lid? Or is it just from moving the laptop around?

Sounds like you and I have the same issue. I've had the laptop for almost 2 years now; I hope to see what happens when your new battery arrives.

The laptop turns on by itself sometimes when either when I take it out of my bag, or handle it a certain way such as opening up the screen. I have a feeling it may be because the power button is somewhat squished and not in its normal original position. I use this laptop as my work machine, so i'm turning it on and off everyday. It could possibly be the case being bent or handled a certain way that is pressing that power button enough to turn on the machine. I would send it in to get it fixed, but I can't have more than a day without my laptop

Just got the new battery today. No good. It does the same thing. It has to be something with motherboard charging system. Looks like I'll be calling Sager and returning for a MB upgrade. It's a shame really..I think my warrenty just expired. When I turned on the laptop and checked the battery in windows it read 0 and charging even though it wasn't plugged in. It definitely has to be something with the motherboard.

yes, all my standby settings are turned off.

UPDATE: Just after I wrote my last post on this, my motherboard started smoking and burnt out. Yes, I opened up the back and a portion of the motherboard right behind where the A/C adapter plugs in one of the chips is totally burnt out (a black chip is now a white powered piece of burnt crisp). There is no power going to the laptop anymore, I just sent it out last Saturday to get it fixed. I'm just glad i'm under extended warranty.

The A/C adapter just kicked my NP9860's arse.

Funny isn't the word. The NBF Sager support forums have been loaded with posts from 98xx owners for years about issues like this one. How are you accessing this forum?

I had this issue a few months later I smelled something and the board fried. I then got a replacement board for 1000 and it wouldnt play games right stuttered alot. Then I got blocks on the screen. I thought bad gpu. I tried to replace thermal pads with artic silver no luck. Sent it back to sager again and now they wont fix it because I took off thermal pads to use compound. Dumb because I told them I did that before I sent it in then they acted surprised. Basically I have 4300 in mine and end up with nothin. I used it for travel gaming now I just bought a 129 ps2 to take with me. Less hassle.

I hope you all dont have same issue. Before I had the issue with light I had a couple random shutdowns. When the power light was always on it thought it was always on ac power even when on battery. Only way it would shut off is when battery was dead. I had a spare battery to try and it ended up being the board.

Well on my 9860 the leds stay on when the laptop is off but the power supply is still plugged in and charging. They only stay off when i dont have the power supply plugged in. I've had it for almost two years now and it's always been like this.

The rest of your problems definetely sound like and probably are motherboard issues but i think this led thing is normal, for my machine at least.

It's all good now, but there were some problems with the motherboard. I had to have 2 replaced.
