Sager 9880 with stock NVIDIA drivers

Subject says all, but some more detail for those interested:

Just had my 9880 upgraded to a 7900gtx_512 (so I guess that it's now technically a 9890...). One of the driving factors for the upgrade was that NVIDIA now supports the 7 Go series drivers directly. [This is important since I do GPU work, and the newer driver releases generally add/improve OpenGL features we're interested in.]

I'm happy to report that the 84.63 driver from NVIDIA's website seems to work flawlessly both for research codes and BF2. Sager is still providing 84.26, so at the momemt using the NVIDIA driver isn't a huge gain. But in the future 9890 owners who want or need to live on the bleeding edge should be able to grab the latest NVIDIA driver without waiting for a "sagerized" version.

Might i suggest, if you dont know about it. http://www.LAPTOPVIDEO2GO.com
They enable support for all drivers they can get their hands on.

Thanks.

I'm aware of the unsupported inf file hacks, but avoid them since using a non-stock driver might call research benchmarks into question. Of course, for BF2 there's no such concern. :-)

Everyone and their grandmother uses those 'hacked' drivers. I don't understand how you could come to the conclusion that the driver could compromise benchmarks. The Sager approved drivers are usually ancient. Those are misleading and will most likely be more unstable with current software more than hacked drivers from laptopvideo2go.

on a side note if you are looking for hacked drivers for any company....http://www.omegadrivers.net/ is one of my personal favorites.....also when reinstalling any videocard drivers I would download a proper "driver cleaner" for the best installs and performance

Omegadrivers stopped producing nVidia drivers a while ago. http://www.tweaksrus.com/ provides, in my opinion, the best 3rd party drivers.

The key word is "research". If you're going to publish results, they have to be repeatable. As a gaming box, I could care less. For research benchmarks, sticking with supported drivers is one less headache when reporting results.

Just a FYI I have tried laptopvideo2go drivers and they have always crashed my 9880.

Only problem is, 3DMark means virtually nothing. This was proved with NVIDIA's GeForce 8x00 cards. The GeForce 8700M GT spits out scores similar to, if not better than, the GeForce Go 7950 GTX. Yet it has been PROVED by many sources that the GeForce 7950 GTX is a better real-world performer. This only solidifies my long-time "hatred" of 3DMark.

As far as video drivers are concerned, none of the ones at LaptopVideo2Go (or the MobileForce drivers I author) are "hacked". The installer's INF is simply modded to add support for mobile GPUs. On some drivers, this causes problems, but no driver is perfect (and that's an understatement with NVIDIA's 1xx.xx drivers).

156.55 is the first driver of NVIDIA's 1xx.xx-Series to be a TRULY mobile driver, meaning it has PowerMizer settings and whatnot. I'd honestly suggest everyone at least give them a try, making sure to do it "right" by following my directions in THIS THREAD.
