m1210 Hard Drive Noise

I've noticed that the hard drive in my m1210 (100GB 7200RPM) occassionally makes a discomforting noise. It sounds a lot like normal read/write noise, just a lot louder. This is the drive I purchased with the computer, for the record. Does this sound like a bad drive? I haven't encountered any problems with lost data, etc. that would lead me to believe the drive was defective.

I'm curious to hear if anyone else has noticed this.

Yep, both my Hitachis did that. Normal, apparently. My M1210 80GB Hitachi still does it. Normal sound, normal sound, CRUNCH <--- occasionally. My 100GB Hitachi did it in my M1710, and I had the drive exchanged and got a Seagate, but since my M1210 Hitachi does it, I'm not bothered anymore. I will say, my IDE 100GB and 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm drives never did it. This is apparently introduced, somehow, with the SATA versions.

seagate doesn't :] I swap my m1210 hd w/ my acer 8204 ^-^

i have the 100 gig 7200 and haven't really noticed any discomforting sounds coming out randomly.

Is there any way to check the vendor of your hard drive without actually taking it out?

go into device manager (control panel -> system -> hardware) and open the tree for hard drives. there will be a listing that has a bunch of letters and numbers. i happen to know seagates begin with ST and then have numbers based on generation and capacity and interface, and toshiba, i think, is MK. WD, i presume begins with WD, hitachi maybe HT or HD? but you basically can go google that number and it will tell you what exactly you have

my 1210 hitachi drive also makes a weird noise, like as if a drop of water dripped onto the drive, kinda high pitched and nothing like a crunch... but only when its idling, weird!

My m1210 toshiba does it too. I get annoyed when I'm studying quietly in my room.

my e1705 hd started making some noise. its like a clunking sound and it happens randomly. Its a WD 120 gb 5400 rpm drive. Just got the lappy a week ago. If it becomes too much of an issue, I'll ask dell for a replacement HD.

I think the problem is not with the HDD, but with the M1210 being so quiet most of the time. I never noticed the HDD noise with many other laptops since they tended to be much louder (fan noises, etc...), but since the M1210 is so quiet, I notice the HDD clicking noises much more.


just a theory.

I'm using a loaner Presario notebook right now and I just checked my hard drive.

100gb Fujitsu, retails for $5,500? wtf?

that link links to a 50 pack of the hard drive... so, it comes to like $110 per drive... and yeah, $100-$150 for a 100gb drive is about right...
