I have two other PC's running Vista with different soundcards and they BOTH have Stereo Mix enabled (one is running an Audigy 2) so it can't be that Dell disabled it for legal reasons. NigelS
No INF hack yet. Dell disabled it because they don't want to pay for the features. Different OEM's choose what features of the soundchip they want to enable through software based on what the pay for.

Cheap bastards. This xps1710 isn't a cheap laptop and must be a best seller for them, I can't imagine it would have affected their bottom line by much to add the features we all want. By INF hack I assume you mean INI hack? It seems the M1710 uses WRT_M2-3.INI. At least I have gleaned the Input Monitor hack from way back in this thread. Hope someone manages to find how to add some of the other features back. There's a lot of community talent out there (witness the continued breaking of DRM schemes). NigelS

nrmsmith. Nigel, You are of course correct. Dell buys these chips by the thousands for about $1.00 each and can implement any features they want. In some cases additional physical parts components will be necessary for certain features and that still doesn't cost that much. If you pay extra for the Creative Audigy Software you still don't get these features. The real reason I suspect is that Dell does not want to deal with most users confusion, problems and support questions that will arise from the additional features. Runaway feedback and the circuitry's inherent latency are the most notable. Less options for less problems. Again as to cost : the Sigmatel development kit is available to any mass buyer. GEEP

Perhaps I should write them suggesting that they can avoid this altogether by giving up selling technology and instead start selling fruit & vegatables NigelS

I thinking this is probably the best thread for my question.

I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate (I know, I know - no jokes please) on my Inspiron 9300. I'm using the latest Vista 32-bit Sigmatel drivers from Dell's website however I don't have any control options for the subwoofer. Just for clarification the i9300 has a Sigmatel 975x chip and not the newer 92xx chip.

Are there any i9300 owners out there that are running Vista and have a subwoofer slider? and if so, how did you get it?

Thanks,

Martian

so is there any simple way to boost the quality of my sound in my xps m1710 with the sigmatel drivers. because the stuff on the first few pages all said there were many cons to the process
post #447 of 561
Hey guys, there was a post way back in this thread (270 something or so) that had a soundcard driver that let my m1710 running vista have stereo mix available. I tried using that same driver on my new inspiron 1420 and it wouldn't install the driver correctly.

I'm using windows Vista Ultimate 32bit on my Inspiron E1705/9400.

First you need to download this:

http://home.coqui.net/darkkai/R122161.rar

Then uninstall your old drivers (Start, control panel, program and features, right click sigmatel and hit uninstall) and restart. Once your computer boots up it should automatically start installing the sigmatel audio drivers (stupid vista). After its done installing right click My Computer, hit properties, and then hit device manager. Once you're in the device manager panel hit "+" on your audio devices. The sigmatel driver should appear, if it appears right click it and hit uninstall.

Remember http://home.coqui.net/darkkai/R122161.rar?

It's time to extract it and install the drivers. Once its done installing try out your stereo mix and sigmatel control panel.

Good luck !

Thanks Kirios, Is this driver above in Post # 448 also compatible with Windows XP and Subwoofer. Geep

Geep

Looks to me (I downloaded it) as if it is designed for WinXP and not Vista.

SUCCESS : FULL OPTIONS DRIVER Thanks to NigelS for response. He is correct driver linked in Post # 448 is perfect with XP and Dell E1705 : all options originally desired work perfectly (poor SN ratio of input aside). No need to uninstall first. Subwoofer controls are good. There are a few Sigmatel Controls Panel Sliders that are not supported in this machine...no problem at all. Get it install it. For Creative users: Remove or disable auto-start of Creative Software components with confidence unless you really need EAX???. There is a nice Sigmatel 10 band EQ. If you need the Creative Midi Synth you should be able to keep it while disabling the rest of Creative though I've not tried it yet. If you merely uncheck and don't launch any Creative processing like the checkmark in the Eq it won't run nor use any processes. There is even a configurable ASIO driver though no substitute for a quality Mic input. You can go to Control Panel and drag the icon for Sigmatel to the Quicklaunch toolbar area on lower left so you may access record and monitor options in a hurry. GREAT GEEP PS Sigmatels Panel SOLO buttons ALL Crash the Panel.
The SKIPPING AUDIO after many apps and internet has begun as previous Drivers. Get an external mixer and better yet USB 2.0 or Firewire sound.

They work for both vista and XP. If you read prior to these post I posted for someone to fix them and no one could. I tried it myself in my own way and it worked, that's when I decided to share it with everyone. I'm not saying it's going to work for everyone, but it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck.

is there page or point in this thread that says how to successfully hack the simgatel drivers or whatever and improve our audio quailty??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????
Well Rouge, No, there is no improving the audio quality of the internal circuitry. It is the audio circuit surroundings and power supply bus that induces all this noise. If you want better audio quality buy a Pro interface in USB or Firewire. That is what I did but still for everyday stuff you can get noise levels down as low as a very good cassette.

sry guys. i cant seem to download from the link in 448. any1 else having problems? can some1 give me another link?
So this means that this driver has been successfully "hacked", and has zero problems? If so, great work guys =D
post #457 of 561
I thought the driver at post 448 is nearly perfect on E1705 but not so the SKIPPING AUDIO after many apps and internet has appeared as in other drivers" and some buttons do not work and all solo buttons will crash the Sigmatel Control panel app. but you can close and reopen. GEEP PS Get an external mixer and better yet USB 2.0 or Firewire sound.

Anand, I did not post this link but I checked and it still works. Try to download from another computer even if not in the forum. Use a copy of the link into browser address bar. GEEP

So, I have unlocked the stereo mix, but how can I unlock the "What u hear" option? Are they the same? If anyone is curious, I need to unlock it so I can play my "songs" under my alias of Frank Sinatra in several FPS games I play. Nothing better than killing while listening to new york new york...
