mmmkay. I need a linux distro..FAST for the following things

Keeps All existing files intact
and will work with onboard wifi.

I have a Toshiba A-15 S157 and it just stopped working. I've had it up to here with all of windows shortcomings (For example, when i had my apple, if I had to EVER re-install Mac OS, it kept EVERYTHING intact. Windows, No matter what, ERASES EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is NOT good when you cant backup your drive. with apps, some of them probably wont work anymore because of the registry.) BTW, I think the registry is the reason it's not working... will this matter? And, I was also wondering, would Ubuntu be a good choice? I'm already running 5.0LTS on my old tangerine iMac.

Thanks,
Aaron

first of all the only reason windows erases everything when you reinstall the os because it formats the hdd. but moving on.

ubuntu dapper drake is a very good option..overall 6.06.1 is a great distro to get started with be weary of it using 250mb ram just to run the bare os itself, add firefox (100mb) and gaim (20mb) and if you only have 512mb you might be left short. so to slim ubuntu down xubuntu is an alternative, takes only about 120mb to run the system.

Suggestion based on your first post, if using linux make sure your home directory is on a seperate partition, that way if you DO ever have to reformat you dont lose your files and user configs.

Quite possibly....

Actually I have decided to look into rebuilding my site to a CSS based site from strictly flash for a couple of reasons... At any rate one of the things I am doing is looking into themeing a nice Drupal setup for my portfolio, but on top of that possibly having a second section of it for Linux/Blog/Etc that I would start a book on to take the place of the Wiki I had up for a while. Kinda linux for windows users thing, well see if I get that far before i lose interest though

Nice idea, seablade, I always like CSS/Flash.

yeah. i have 450 MB of Ram, so ubuntu might be out of the question. I didnt think it was such a mamory hog!

Nah you should be able to run Ubuntu on that to be honest. Worst case scenario run XUbuntu, but I tihnk Gnome will be fine on that, if not KDE as well.

wanna update the numbers on xubuntu's ram usage after i BUMed it. right now after a fresh boot i am only using 80mb ram. thats pretty impressive. i am sure if i have chosen to stick with e17 of fluxbox i could drive that number into the 60mb range....leaving me with 964mb for other affairs

That is pretty impressive. I havent run Fluxbox since I used to run Slackware. I doo have a test machine in the lab that runs kubuntu with 384MB of ram. It runs ok but like you were saying; The minute you fire up more than a couple of apps it really takes a performance hit. I'll have to give Xubuntu a whirl.
