DV4000 can not see DVDRW drive.

got this from a friend and it would not boot, fixed the registry and now it boots into XP, but the DVDRW is not seen in the device manager. Only shows a primary IDE controller - not sure if this machine even has a secondary tho.

It was acting up a bit even before I got windows to boot - I could boot to it sometimes and sometimes not.

The DVDRW drive looks pretty proprietary, I guess HP would have to replace it.

Could it be something to do with this goofy quickplay software?

Flashed the the latest P17 BIOS for the DV4170us. the drive is not even the drive listed on the HP drive site - it's an Matsushita uj840d.

this BIOS is so basic, it really doesn't even list the drives. I did flash to thte latset P17 version. CDZROm is an option in the boot sequence. Will not boot from CDROM (DVDRW) tho.

can not update drive because does not exsist. no Firmware update for this drive anyway,

drive has power and spins when I dsk is inseted. does read the disk.

Can not insall XP without CDROM access, unles they make it on 1278 floppies.

Doubt that it has a secondary, my DV1000 does not.

that is what I was thinking. the slave on the primary is just greyed out. I tried removing the controller and rebooting and nothing.

Would not boot all the time from the DVDRW, looked for a firmware update and there was none. tried uninstalling the primary controller and rebooting and nothing, the slave is grayed out.

OK, I uninstalled the Primary Controller (Not in Safe Mode) and rebooted and it FOUND the DVDRW. XP says I need to reboot to finish installing hardware and it not there when I reboot. Getting close...

Now I see a Secondry controller with a ! by it in the device Manager and no DVDRW again. must be a way to enable it.

It's useless. the DVDRW did appear one time after uninstalling the IDE controllers adn rebooting, but ever since I have not been able to see it.

Must be a hardware issue because I can not BOOT from the CDROM. I should be able to boot from an XP CD and reinstall windows. About ready to give up on this.

well, i would try to find just a simple cd optical drive. replacing an optical drive is much cheaper than the laptop

So I guess if the DVDRW is faulty the Secondary Controller would not show up? Now If I can figure out how to get it out of this thing.
