Screen issues with 14.1'' T60P (non-flexview)

Is anyone else experiencing terribly narrrow vertical viewing angles on thier non-flexview T60s? I have the TMD display and the whites have hues of pink, the black is washed out, but worst of all...the verticle viewing angles are worse than my old E-Machines M6805.

Anyone having issues?

The viewing angles are so terrible that my 3 year old Dell is better

Which screen do you have Borgus?

yesss!! omg, i have the same exact problem... the colors are so crappy... it looks like i'm looking into a dream world. And when i play video games, the lighting is way off. i'm trying to fix it now... called IBM and all. If you have any info it would be much appreciated

I'm really hoping that this is just a hardware malfunction and that it can be fixed.... cuz i dunno.. i paid a hefty price for this thing

Are these on the 1400 x 1050 screen?
mine is 1400x1050 yes, VGXA monitor with ATI Radeon x1300

I called IBM, and they're making me send it in for repair... hopefully it's fixable and not one of those "it's just the way it is" things.... cuz i'll be really upset. This laptop is absolutely perfect love everything about it... except for the screen.

Hmmmm, my T60P is due to arrive this week. I hope it doesn't have any issues like that since I won't have the time to get it fixed. I have the FireGL 5200.

I have a 14.1'' T60P with the FireGL card. The video card has nothing to do with this problem. It is the poor quality screen that Lenovo chose to equip this unit with. After doing some research, I learned that Lenovo equips these machines with one of three LCD panels: (1) Samsung (2) Boe-Hydis (3) TMD. The first two are basically equivalent, they both have 25 ms refresh times, with no reported problems with viewing angles or coloration. The TMD screen, which I have (verified through the part number), has a 50 ms response time and has been verified by other users on thinkpads.com to have issues. I have been on the phone for hours with Lenovo about this lack of consistency. I am trying to get them to put the Boe-Hydis or Samsung screen on my computer, which I do not think is an unreasonable request given that other people are getting theirs with these screens. After being bounced around from the sales department, to the repair center in Atlanta, I am about to give up and utilize the 30 day return policy. Speaking of return policy, if you bought your computer after July 31, be prepared to pay a restocking fee because Lenovo decided to change the policy. Thankfully, I'm within the no hassle 30 day return program.
Please keep me posted on your problems.

Question for you guys, If you hook up a 2ms LCD via dvi everything should be ok right? I'm just hoping this isn't a GPU problem and as stated above an lcd issue.

People with the Boe-Hydis and Samsung screens are not experiencing these issues. That should be your answer right there.

How do you check which screen you have? Mine just arrived and looks great...

Hmm, i just checked my FRU# on IBM's main site.. and it turns out that i have the Boe-Hydis. So i guess the T60's screen is just bad. The lighting is basically just uneven on this screen. Viewing angles are pretty bad. The black is pretty bad too. On the a full black screen, about the entire bottom half of hte screen has a film of white on it, at any angle.

Really? This is the first I have heard of this issue on the Boe-Hydis (who also manufacture the flex-view). I am waiting on a call from Customer Relations to see if they can build me a T60P with the Samsung screen; otherwise, I will regrettably send this computer back... It boggles me that Lenovo can ask $2000 for a computer and equip it with a substandard screen.

yea me too :\. I don't understand why they can't just give everyone the same screen. Instead they make this like a friggin lottery.

Update:

Since my last post, I have managed to get through to a very helpful customer relations representative who seems to be taking action in resolution of this issue. I just wanted to let everyone know that action is being taken, and Lenovo is doing their part to make this situation right.

Was your screen issue resolved?

Hi there,

I just ordered a T60p this past week directly from lenovo (over the phone) and unfortunately didn't start reading these forums before I did so!

My question is this, were you able to get a samsung screen on your thinkpad? I ordered the 14.1" TFT active matrix 1400 x 1050 with the ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 card.

I am spending 3 grand on this thing and I don't want to play a lottery with the quality of the display. I have no problem with calling lenovo and demanding I get the specific screen I want, but I would appreciate any advice from people who have more experience than me on this sort of thing!

I ordered my T60p less than 3 weeks ago and my T42 about 3 years ago. Both times I received samsung screens.

I do agree with you about the absurdity of the lottery with Lenovo/IBM and everybody should get Hydis Screens, NMB keyboards, and quiet fans with their thinkpads for the premium prices they pay for thinkpads.

On the other hand though, the availability of thinkpads would go down the toilet if they stuck to one manufacturer for parts and I'd much rather receive my laptop about a week after I order it than wait a month or more.

Hello. I have not received my computers back from Lenovo as of Sept. 18. Supposedly the computers are with their project engineers to determine what the problem may be. They will be changing my display to the samsung, so I am hopful that it will be of higher quality. You should know that I am a very discerning user who requires higher refresh rates and detailed coloration with above average viewing angles. My work consists of a lot of video editing and graphic design, so the screen is a ultraimportant issue with me. You may not be as picky as me and would be satisfied with either screen. If you are just using the computer for office documents, web pages, etc. I do not suspect you would find fault with any of the screens. Hope this helps.

Thanks Borgus,
Your comments do help. I work at an art school that specializes in graphic design, digital video production, and game art design (the specific department I work in) so I often look at student work. I understand that as a business lenovo works with different manufacturers but I feel the end product should be equal for every customer!

I am very excited to receive my laptop and based on the research I've done within these forums it seems I'm looking at a good month or more wait. That's okay but I'm hoping to receive my T60p with the highest quality parts so I can put it to use right away and not send it back and forth to lenovo and waste more time.

I'll give them a call on monday and see if I can somehow have them supply my T60p with a samsung screen before it ships. I only ordered it on Thurs Sept. 14 so hopefully they won't give me a hard time(although I expect they will)
